Haley McLean tabbed a Distinguished Scholar by the conference, one of five in Hockey East
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Ten Boston College women's hockey players earned Hockey East All-Academic Team honors on Wednesday as the conference released the 2016-17 honorees.
One hundred and twenty-three student-athletes around the conference earned a spot on the league's academic squad, which is composed of players posting a 3.0 or better grade point average during all academic periods in which she was competing during the past season.
The Eagles who earned All-Academic honors include: Andie Anastos, Molly Barrow, Kali Flanagan, Megan Keller, Ryan Little, Haley McLean, Kathleen McNamara, Caroline Ross, Serena Sommerfield and Gabri Switaj.
McLean, who graduated in May with a degree in applied psychology and human development, was one of five student-athletes who earned Distinguished Scholar accolades. Distinguished Scholars are recognized after placing on the All-Academic Team each of their four seasons of competition. Anastos and Switaj are three-time honorees – two of the 21 players league-wide – while Keller and Sommerfield are two-time performers.
Additionally, Flanagan and Keller garnered All-Academic Team honors while also balancing extensive time away second semester with the U.S. National Team. Both players helped the U.S. win the gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Championships in Michigan in April. Flanagan and Keller will take a one-year leave of absence from Boston College during the 2017-18 academic year to train and compete with the U.S. National Team ahead of the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, next winter.
The Eagles, who wrapped up the 2016-17 season with a 28-6-5 record, finished the year ranked No. 3 in both the U.S. College Hockey Online and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls. BC won its fourth straight Hockey East regular-season championship, second straight Hockey East Tournament crown and second Beanpot title in a row and later advanced to its seventh Frozen Four before falling to No. 1 Wisconsin, 1-0, in the national semifinal.
