Eagles resume practice with all eyes pointed to Saturday's spring game
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College football team resumed spring practice after a week off following Easter break. The Eagles have completed 13 spring practices with one final workout scheduled for Thursday prior to Saturday's annual spring game at noon inside Alumni Stadium.
With the spring game Saturday, the coaching staff will determine this week the game format and rosters.
"No, (the spring game was) never in doubt, just how we would play it," said head coach Steve Addazio following practice Tuesday. "Whether we'd divvy up teams, whether you go offense, defense … so that was the only thing. Sometimes it's hard to divvy up teams if you don't have enough numbers. It gets too disseminated. I want to what happens what happens tomorrow, if we stay healthy tomorrow. We had a good, hard practice today. We're going to have another good, hard practice Thursday. We're getting a lot of productivity. We'll just make the decision. We're going to play a game out here. It's just a question of the format of it, but we'll be fine."
Addazio went into detail about how the teams could be split up for Saturday's Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Game. "I think what you try to figure out is do you want to divide it or do you want to keep some continuity with it," said Addazio. "You can divide it, or you can say, 'We're going to go 1-O (first-team offense) versus 1-D (first-team defense) – so the 1-O and the 2-D (second-team defense) versus the 1-D and the 2-O (second-team offense). It's the same difference. Then the only difference is being able to stay in continuity with the guys that have worked with each other all spring long. I think if you're down numbers, that's a good way to do it. If your numbers are high enough and you want to divvy it up – we have a few guys who didn't practice this spring, so we're already down. If you divvy it, you could have a young guy who isn't really ready to play in there protecting the quarterback. We'll see. I have to figure it out."
As with any football team with an open competition at quarterback, all eyes will be on the signal callers Saturday at Alumni Stadium. Addazio touched on what he has seen from the quarterbacks this spring through 13 practices.
"They've had a great spring," Addazio said. "They've all improved and done a great job. I thought Darius (Wade) has had a great spring. I though Anthony (Brown), EJ (Perry) – a young guy – John Fadule – these guys have all worked really hard, and you see development."
Overall, Addazio has been happy with the team's progress this spring as the momentum has continued for the Eagles after ending the 2016 season with three consecutive wins, including the first bowl win in school history since 2007.
"We've had a good spring, so I hope we stay healthy, play the game, have a little fun out here and then close it."
