Catching Up With Ashley Obrest

Coach looks back, looks ahead at the season
After a month of long flights, five-game weekends and even 12 straight days away from The Heights, Boston College finally got a break. The Eagles resume play Friday, March 24 against Pittsburgh.
Â
Head coach Ashley Obrest considers the gap between games an opportunity to fine-tune for the remainder of the season. Obrest offered insight on the state of the Eagles.
Â
Q: What are your thoughts on the team's performance in the ACC-opening series against Virginia?
Â
A: I thought we played a good series. We obviously dropped that one game on Friday, but I thought it was a good, competitive series all-around. We had good defense and timely hitting. I think we got caught up a little bit in that second game, sitting on that two-run lead. We kind of put it in cruise control instead of attacking the game. So we had a little bit of a chat on that after and kind of put some more effort in next game. We came out and we played a great Game 3.
Â
Q: There's a long break between last weekend's Virginia series and next weekend's Pittsburgh series. How can the team maintain momentum with so much time between games?
Â
A: I think the time's actually in our favor. We're on spring break, and we were on the road for 12 days. So we came back, gave the girls a couple days off and got back after it Wednesday. They're sore, they're tired, so the bye weekend actually plays into our favor. We're going to still go live in practice and see some live-game situations. But I don't think anyone's looking at it like it's too much of a break. I think it fits in pretty well with our schedule.
Â
Q: Tatiana Cortez and Annie Murphy kicked it into another gear last week. What were your observations of their play?
Â
A: They did kick it into another gear. They were attacking good pitches and going hard – that's the key to hitting. If you look at the film of some of the home runs that Tatiana hit, they were all balls, but she went hard after them. They were convincing home runs. The same thing with Annie Murphy – she's been working on a few things. She kind of sat back and fixed those things and trusted her swing and went hard after every pitch that she took a swing at.
Â
Q: Jessica Dreswick has risen to the occasion with an ACC-leading 95 innings pitched. What does it say about her that she's been so consistent with that workload?
Â
A: Dreswick has been so consistent with her workload because she has prepared for months and years to be in the position that she is in. I am a big believer that confidence comes from preparation and simply work. She knows the she is prepared and has put in the work to be successful.
