Boston College's Austin Cangelosi claimed Hockey East Co-Player of the Week honors after a four-point weekend, including a pair of power play goals and both game-winning goals over Vermont in the Hockey East quarterfinals
WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Senior centerman Austin Cangelosi earned Co-Hockey East Player of the Week honors after his sound performance to help No. 3-seed Boston College to a two-game sweep over No. 6 Vermont on March 10-11, 2017.
To start the weekend, the Estero, Fla. native scored eight seconds into regulation to set the tone against Vermont on Friday night. Cangelosi's goal is the fastest goal to open a playoff game in Hockey East history and ties the fastest to open a period in the postseason.
Cangelosi followed that performance on Saturday night with a pair of power play goals in the second period, alone, along with an assist to cap off his four-point weekend.
On both Friday and Saturday, Cangelosi accounted for both game-winning goals. It marked his second and third game-winners of the season as he now possesses nine game-winners, in all.
Not only is Cangelosi tied for the team lead with 34 points and leads the Eagles with 20 goals scored, he is college hockey's most lethal faceoff men. BC's assistant captain leads the nation in faceoff winning percentage (65.2 percent), claiming 543 – of – 833 draws thus far.
For a career, Cangelosi has accounted for 55 goals and 61 assists.
Hockey East's other Hockey East Player of the Week is Boston University's Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson. UMass Lowell's Kenny Hausinger earned Rookie of the Week honrs while Notre Dame's Cal Peterson was the Defensive Player of the Week.
No. 3-seed Boston College will square off against archrival No. 2-seeded Boston University on Friday night in the second Hockey East semifinal contest at TD Garden. No. 1-seed UMass Lowell and No. 4-seed Notre Dame will collide in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. Friday's contest will be broadcast live on New England Sports Network (NESN).
