Eagles will travel to take on the Saints in a two-game weekend series
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The second-ranked Boston College women's hockey team returns to action this weekend with a two-game set at No. 8 St. Lawrence at the Saints' Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.
The teams are familiar foes, having played regular series since BC head coach Katie Crowley took over the program in 2007-08. The Eagles are 17-11-4 all-time against the Saints, including a 6-4-2 mark at Appleton Arena. BC and SLU met at least once every year between 2007-08 and 2015-16, with two-game series in eight of 11 seasons under Crowley's guidance.
Although the 2016-17 season was the first time under Crowley over that the teams did not meet at least once during the regular season, the programs were matched up in the 2017 NCAA Quarterfinals. In that meeting, the fourth-ranked Eagles topped the sixth-ranked Saints, 6-0, at Kelley Rink to advance to the seventh Frozen Four in program history.
BC held a 1-0 lead after the first period courtesy of Kenzie Kent's power-play goal, but BC netted four goals – including a pair of shorthanded strikes – in the second period and added a final goal in the third to claim their berth in their third-straight Frozen Four. Kent finished the game with three points.
Boston College (8-0-1) is coming off a weekend in which the team earned a 7-4 win at home over No. 9 Providence last Friday, before traveling to Central New York for an afternoon game on Saturday where the Eagles came back from two goals down twice to take a 4-3 win at Syracuse.
St. Lawrence (5-3-2) played two games on the road last weekend, first topping Brown 6-3 on Friday and then taking a 3-2 win at Yale on Saturday. SLU also played Canadian foe Carleton University in an exhibition on Tuesday, earning a 6-1 win.
The Saints' three regular-season losses have come to ranked teams, with two defeated coming to then-No. 2 Clarkson in a non-conference series in late October, and a 3-1 home loss to No. 9 Cornell the following weekend. However, the day after the loss to the Big Red, SLU handed then-No. 5 Colgate its first loss of the season with the 3-1 win.
This weekend's games mark the fourth and fifth games against ranked opponents this season for the Eagles. BC is 3-0-0 in those games so far.
The Eagles come into the game as the top-scoring team in Division 1, averaging 4.44 goals per game. St. Lawrence ranks 18th in D1, posting 2.30 goals per game so far.
Defensively, SLU is tied for 11th among Division 1 programs in goals allowed per game, averaging 2.20. BC comes in 16th among D1 teams allowing 2.44 goals per game.
The Saints' leading scorer, Hannah Miller, has posted 12 points (3 goals, 9 assists) in nine games. Last year, Miller finished the year with 48 points to tie for 11th national. Kennedy Marchment – who was ranked No. 4 nationally in scoring last year with 56 points – is currently third on the Saints with nine points (4 goals, 5 assists) in nine games. Goaltender Grace Harrison has started seven of the Saints' 10 games, recording a 1.83 GAA and a .917 save percentage to go with her 3-2-2 mark. Sonjia Shelly has made the other three starts with a 2.68 GAA and a .879 save percentage to go with her 2-1-0 record.
In goal for BC, Katie Burt is one win away from becoming just the fourth goaltender in NCAA history to reach 100 career wins. She comes into Friday's game with 99 career victories and sits fourth on the NCAA career chart. Her next win will not only be her 100th victory, but also move her into a tie for second on the list.
After the teams meet on Saturday afternoon, BC will return to Hockey East action next weekend with a home-and-home series against UConn. Friday's game is set for 6 p.m. at the Eagles' Kelley Rink, followed by a 3 p.m. faceoff on Saturday at the Huskies' Freitas Ice Forum.
