Senior Day on The Heights Saturday at noon vs. NC State
Do they see an opportunity to beat these guys?
Am I naïve to think that people don't daydream thoughts? But in the same breath, I've seen too much across college football especially in the last week where to me, it's biting people. In this game, you have to bring it every week. Right now, what they see right here is an opportunity to come home. It's a one game season. Let's go get this thing. That's our mindset every week. So, we don't talk about anything but that.
Â
Â
Do you think the bye week was good for you?
I hope so. We certainly look a little faster. I think we look a little energized. I hope we have the same rhythm. It feels like a long time since we've played a game. But we've had good practices. We're more rested. We were able to look at some things. Kids were able to catch up in school. So, I feel good about all of that.
Â
I think you guys were 2-4 when you said in the press conference that you were certain this team was going to turn things around. What did you see at that time and what do you see now?
I saw a group of guys that love football. They're talented and I saw us get crippled with injuries early. There's not much we could do about it. It came like a rush and it stumbled us because we had to put some guys in before they were probably ready to play the game. And we were doing that while we were playing some elite teams. I think that we have the number two ranked schedule in the country right now. Yet you saw the positive things no the film. As each week went, we got better and more confident. But we were still not making those plays that we had an opportunity to make. So you tell yourself that it's only a matter of time, you just have to hang in there and don't let negativity push you the other way. That's the momentum thing that happens nowadays more than ever than in the past with social media and everything. Believe what you see on the film and just keep chipping away and pounding away and good things will happen. The same guys that are freshman at the apex of our offense are still freshman now, but they're a little bit more experienced. We're still going to make young guy mistakes, but here's what's undeniable is that you can see the future, the talent, where exactly things will be. So now it's just putting an investment in the bank and keep working, keep grinding. You're paying forward to something that I think can be really special.
Â
When you balance playing to win now and building for the future, do you see a nationally televised game as an opportunity to help you recruit and build for the future?
Sure. I think all the above. We're going 9,000 miles per hour right now to win the day and to win the game. That never changes, so you're totally focused on what's here and now, but you also know in the back of our head that it's awful nice to know what you're building for too. I've been in situations where it's a long way off in terms of recurring and building talent. I feel like now we mature it, develop it and grow it and we've got some star power type players that can make plays in the conference we're in, which is the toughest conference in America. We are up against it every week and it's a great challenge, so you have to have talent. I think we have that.
Â
Do you also see dividends already from the indoor facility?
I think that there is a statement that we are building our program. We are doing things as a university that are committed to building our football program. The next step is actually walking into a new facility. They are all incremental steps and they are all critically important.
Â
Is this the most dangerous passing attack you think you've faced this year?
I think he's highly accurate. I think he's playing at the top of his game and I think they have really good skill players. I think Clemson can throw it really well too but this team can throw it really well. This is a relay good football team and they've got pieces everywhere. They can run it, throw it and they're good on defense. It's a good football program for sure.
Â
In terms of your game plan, how is everything coming along from day one to day two?
We had this bye week so I feel really good about our preparation right now. All that does is put you in a position to have an opportunity to go play well. You still have to go out and play well. But I've liked our planning against NC State going into this game, but we've got to execute it and we've got to make those plays. We have to take care of the football.
Â
Saturday is kind of the first cold game you'll have all year. What kind of challenges/opportunities does that present for you?
No challenge for us. We practice out here every day. We don't have any indoor, so we feel proud about the fact that at BC this time of year is our advantage. This is what we live in and what we will thrive in, so for people to come play us this time of year, we like that. Is there something better than a fall day in New England? It's going to be a fall, brisk, crisp day. That's football to me.
