Five Rowers Sign NLIs to Join Eagles Next Season

The Eagles race again in March
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Five future members of the Boston College rowing team signed National Letters of Intent to join the Eagles for the 2018-19 season.

Grace Dreyer, Lauren Duffy, Carmen Ewing, Olivia Larder and Brooke Schwab will add to the BC rowing ranks next year.

Grace Dreyer
Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset HS
Port/Starboard/Scull
Intended Major: Undecided in the Carroll School of Management

As a member of the Manhasset High School crew team, Dreyer won the Golden Hammer Award. In 2017, she helped her team place first in the New York State Championship junior eight race and second in the Saratoga Invitational. They finished sixth at the SRAA Nationals and fourth at the Stotesbury Cup in the senior eight race. Dreyer is a member of the National Honor Society at Manhasset High School, as well as the history, Spanish and English honor societies. She also earned the Scholar-Athlete and Citizenship and Service awards.

Why Boston College: "Boston College is competitive both academically and athletically. I found the athletic facilities to be very impressive. I love the location of Boston College's beautiful boathouse on the Charles River. Boston College's Carroll School of Management is an extremely notable program and I am very excited to now be a part of it! I am looking forward to getting the chance to attend Boston College this fall!"

Lauren Duffy

Duffy is not a stranger to the Charles. As a senior captain of the New Trier High School rowing team, the Trevians placed 14th at the Head of the Charles in the women's youth eight race. As a junior, her team earned first at the Midwest Scholastic Championships in the junior varsity eight and second in the SRAA Regatta. She is a two-time recipient of the Board of Education Recognition Award of Outstanding Achievement and earned the Silver OAR Award for Outstanding Attitude in Rowing in 2017. Duffy has been on the honor roll all four years of her high school career and was named a US Rowing Scholastic honorable mention this past year.

The opportunity to row for Boston College's competitive and dedicated team is one that I take with great honor. I was unbelievably impressed with the care and dedication Coach Fiske and Coach Weatherby put into the team. I am very excited to work with the Boston College coaching staff and the girls."

Carmen Ewing
Seattle, Wash. / Holy Names Academy

Ewing is a four-year varsity member of the Holy Names Academy crew team and she rows with the Junior National High Performance team and Vesper Boat Club as well. She has competed in the Head of the Charles three times in her career, finishing 18th in the varsity eight race this past go around, 12th in 2016 and 24th in 2015. Her team finished first at the Head of the Lake in Seattle this year as well. A three-year competitor at Youth Nationals, her varsity four boat has finished ninth in 2014, 10th in 2015 and 17th last year. Ewing is a club leader and co-founder of the Endangered Wildlife Awareness Club at her high school and a member of National Honor Society.

Why Boston College: "I chose Boston College because I felt like it was the best fit for me academically and rowing wise. Plus, when I visited BC, I felt like I was already part of the community and I definitely noticed the strong sense of teamwork on the team as well as in class and school. I love the campus and the community network there too! I'm really excited to take my education and rowing to the next level at Boston College!"

Miami Beach, Fla. / Miami Beach Senior HS

Larder is a member of the Miami Beach Rowing Club and Community Rowing, Inc. She helped her crew to first place in the eight-man race at the U-19 Canadian Henley and the four-man race at the U-19 Club Nationals. She also placed second at Nationals for in the 2x race and in fourth at the Women's Youth Nationals 2x race. Larder was named most valuable varsity rower last season. She was the AP Scholar Award recipient in 2016 and 2017and the president of the National Honor Society. She is also a member of the Student Government Association, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honors Society) and Phi Beta Chi (Science Honors Society).

Attending the Carroll School of Management makes me excited to continue my studies and further my academic interests. After rowing on the Charles River this past summer at the Harry Parker Boathouse, I knew Boston was where I wanted to call home. Schwab is a member of the Saugatuck Rowing Club. In 2017, she helped her team earn gold at the San Diego Crew Classic and silver at Regionals in an eight boat. This past fall, she raced in the varsity eight in the Head of Housatonic. Schwab is an honor roll student and earned the Most Improved honor in Chinese 5A. Her father, Greg, attended Boston College and was a member of the men's club crew team.

Why Boston College: "I chose Boston College because I love its legacy of rigorous academics and athletics. My father is a founding member of the men's rowing team and he inspired my love for the school and the sport. I have extended family living in Boston so I'll be able to see them and my parents because of their proximity to the college."
