BC closes out the fall slate with Foot of the Charles
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College rowing team will close out the fall racing schedule with the Foot of the Charles on Nov. 11. Three boats – the varsity, varsity four and novice eight – will race on Saturday in Boston. The Eagles will also raise ovarian cancer awareness in memory of former Clemson rower Brittany Burns.
Â
The varsity eight race begins at the MIT boathouse at 11 a.m. and the varsity four will start at 11:30 a.m. at the Riverside boathouse. The novice eight will start at 11:45 a.m. also at the Riverside boathouse. All three races end at the Head of the Charles Finish Line, near Artesani Park in Boston.
Â
When the Eagles take to the regatta on Saturday morning, they will don bracelets in support of ovarian cancer. Burns, whose sister is currently a freshman at Boston College, was four-time letter winner on the Clemson rowing team. She was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer in on Dec. 9, 2015. She, along with her immediate family and her fiancée, Tony, dedicated themselves to help other women facing similar hardship. Burns passed away on Feb. 1, 2016 after a courageous battle. The Burns family has partnered with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition to promote earlier awareness of the disease in hopes of saving more lives.
Â
"We are proud to take part in raising awareness about ovarian cancer and the symptoms this weekend," said associate head coach Amy Weatherby. "Brittany Burns' courage to fight and determination to help others is an inspiration to all of us."
Â
Alexis Burns, Brittany's sister, will speak to the BC rowing team about the mission and Brittany's story on Friday. To learn more about ovarian cancer, visit ovarian.org.
