Eagles and Hokies set for Saturday primetime game on ESPN2
Looked like a good practice.
Yeah. Had a great one. Guys working hard, running around, excited. Coaching, playing, practicing, and working on the details. Tremendous Tuesday.
Â
Is that the residual effects of a win?
It's like that a lot here to be honest. When you win, the sky is bluer and everything tastes better. We all know that. But for me to look you in the eye and say we don't go after it every week, I can't do that because we do. We really do. We got after it today. Had a pretty physical day, got a lot done. I think the kids understand that we're in the heart of our season right now. Every one of these are precious.
Â
Â
Can you talk about AJ Dillon?
He's getting better every week. Each week, taking more work and each week, handling it better. As you would imagine, there's a lot of things along the way that have to be corrected which is to be expected. Obviously, the best is yet to come. We all know that. He's making progress and doing some more things and better things, so I'm excited to watch him.
Â
How is AJ doing after the end of the game last Saturday?
He's good. He's super good.
Â
Can you talk about how the offensive line did last game?
Played pretty good last game, especially considering we were slow starting. We had Monteiro not practicing every day. We had Sam Schmal who wasn't able to practice every day, so I think we got stronger as we went. Hopefully we can have a good solid week of practice with everybody functioning together, that matters. Today we did, so that's great.
Â
What do you think Dillon has to improve on?
There's a lot of little things. I think with young guys, protection and third down is one of the last things to come. Catching the ball in the backfield, you don't get as many reps at that. It's like anything else. How far can you push your wall out, you're carrying the ball high, you're running at low pad level as you're getting fatigued. You learn how to push yourself farther. You jog a mile, the next day you can do one and a half and then two. It's hard for most people to just go out and run five. So it's the same thing. It's the same premise.
Â
Just talk about preparing for the Virginia Tech defense.
It's hard. They have a lot of defense and they play very aggressively. And you have to be able to learn how to fit everything in the run game and you have to be able to maintain your physicality and play fast and you have to be able to challenge those DB's and have an understanding of how they are trying to defend you. We're starting that process today.
Â
Is that what tempo gives you?
I think it's challenging because it's harder to call that defense. It's harder to call it when you're trying to watch formations and trying to get everything set perfectly to what you see. I think tempo will challenge that a little bit so we are working hard on creating that.
