Eagles head to BU to begin the season's annual rivalry
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The No. 3 Boston College women's hockey team starts its weekend of Hockey East games on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the team heads down Commonwealth Avenue for a game at #BattleOfCommAve rival Boston University. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at Walter Brown Arena.
Â
Boston College (4-0-1, 1-0-1 HEA) comes into the game off a 4-2 win at Vermont last Sunday in which Caitrin Lonergan (3 goals, 1 assist) and Daryl Watts (1 goal, 3 assists) each tallied four points. Watts earned Hockey East rookie of the week and the NCAA's #1 Star honors for her eight-point effort last week as BC went 2-0-1 in three contests.
Â
With the win in goal on Sunday, Katie Burt also picked up her 52nd career victory in Hockey East games. BC's next conference game with Burt in goal will give the senior the league's career wins record outright as she enters the game tied with former UNH goaltender Melissa Bourdon.
Â
Boston University (1-4-0, 1-4-0 HEA) comes into Sunday's game following its first win of the season last Sunday against UConn. The Terriers topped the Huskies 6-2, and got a pair of four-point games from Rebecca Leslie (3 goals, 1 assist) and Victoria Back (shorthanded goal, 3 assists) in the win.
Â
In an odd scheduling quirk, the Terriers have only played Hockey East games so far this season, with its first seven games coming against league foes before its first non-conference games, a Nov. 3-4 series with RIT.
Â
Bach – the runner-up for Hockey East Player of the Year in 2016-17 – leads the Terriers in scoring with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists), while Leslie is second with four points, all coming last Sunday in the UConn win.
Â
In goal, senior Erin O'Neil has seen the majority of the time, starting four of five games. She has a .907 save percentage on 140 shots, with a 3.23 goals against average and a 0-4-0 record. Freshman Corinne Schroeder got the start on Sunday against UConn, picking up the win with a 26-save effort.
Â
BC leads the all-time series against BU, 25-17-6, including an 11-7-2 mark at Walter Brown Arena. Last year, BC won the season series 2-1-1, including a win in the first round of the Beanpot. However, the Terriers' win came at Walter Brown Arena on Nov. 5. In that game, BC had a pair of two-goal leads – 2-0 and 3-1 – before BU scored five goals in the third period to claim the 5-3 win.
Â
Makenna Newkirk leads all active Eagles in scoring against Boston University, posting 12 points in eight games – including seven points in four games last year. As a freshman, she recorded her first career hat trick at Walter Brown Arena on Nov. 7, 2015. Kenzie Kent (1 goal, six assists in 12 games) and Lonergan (3 goals, 4 assists in four games) have seven points apiece against the Terriers. Burt is 7-2-2 all-time against BU with a 1.97 GAA, a .925 save percentage and two shutouts.
Following Saturday's game, the Eagles return to Kelley Rink on Sunday, Oct. 29, when the team hosts Maine in a 2 p.m. game. Sunday's contest serves as the Eagles' annual Skating Strides game, in conjunction with Hockey East, and will be immediately followed by the fall edition of Skating with the Eagles. Admission is free and the game will be streamed live on ESPN3.
