Eagles to Host Virginia, Virginia Tech Next
October 25, 2017 | Volleyball
Volleyball will play Thursday night and Sunday afternoon
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Following a one-weekend road trip, Boston College volleyball will return to Chestnut Hill and Power gym to host the Virginias. Virginia is slated to take the court on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., while Virginia Tech will challenge the Eagles on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Â
BC hosted Clemson and Georgia Tech the weekend of Oct. 8, generating its first two ACC wins of the season, but the Eagles fell to both the second time around after not having the home-field advantage. Graduate Lynn Braakhuis led the charge with 18 kills and 13 digs on the weekend, while sophomore Jane DeJarld had a team-high 35 assists. Freshman Amaka Chukwujekwu registered six blocks against Clemson last Friday.
Â
"Still a process of putting together everything at the same time," said head coach Chris Campbell when asked about takeaways from the weekend. "There are times where we block and defend well, but our hitting percentage is still a bit low. Other nights our hitting percentage is pretty good, but we're not slowing the other team down enough to stay in. It's still that aspect of getting everybody on the same page on the same night. We also made a few too many errors: too many missed serves or getting aced on serve receive or net fouls. That sort of thing. Once those get high, it's hard to dig yourself out of those holes."
Â
During their last meeting, BC came out victorious over Virginia in five sets in Charlottesville. The Cavaliers have yet to achieve an ACC win and are 4-17 on the season. The team is led by sophomore Jelena Novakovic with 217 kills, freshman Megan Wilson with 540 assists and sophomore Kelsey Miller with 251 digs. Virginia is 10th in the ACC with 878 digs on the season, seventh in service aces with 91, and ninth in assists with 1,033 during their 2017 campaign.
Â
Virginia Tech will play Syracuse before coming to The Heights, but is currently 8-13 overall and 2-8 in the ACC, downing Wake Forest and Virginia earlier this season. The Hokies beat the Eagles in three sets last season, so BC is on the lookout for retribution. Freshman Ester Talamazzi paces the Hokies with 249 kills and 181 digs on the season. Redshirt junior setter Rhegan Mitchell is sixth in the conference with 793 assists.
Â
The Hokies are eighth in assists (11.96 per set), seventh in kills (12.70 per set) and 10th in digs (13.4 per set) in the conference.
Â
"Both Virginia and Virginia Tech have new coaching staffs so there's definitely going to be a new style or system in place for both of them," said Campbell on this weekend's opponents.
Â
Both matches will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
