Weekly Countdown: Three Players Who Could Break BC Records
January 20, 2017 | Softball
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – When Megan Cooley graduated last season, she took several of the Boston College softball team's records with her. Cooley holds the Eagles' all-time steals record with 86. She also holds BC's single-season records in hits (63 in 2014), runs (44 in 2013) and stolen bases (31 in 2013).
Â
But BC returns plenty of talent capable of rewriting the record books. Junior Jessica Dreswick already tops BC history in fewest walks allowed per seven innings.
Â
With three weeks until the Eagles' season opener, here's more on the three players within reach of BC records. Check back throughout the next week for video interviews with these players.
Â
Tatiana Cortez: all-time runs batted in
The senior sits third in team history with 122 career RBI. Tory Speer, class of 2014, leads the Eagles with 142. Cara Blumfield, class of 2003, places second with 128. Cortez plated 49 in 2014, 36 in 2015 and a team-leading 37 last year, putting the senior on pace to take BC's all-time record. The 2016 All-ACC First-Team selection completed one of the most successful offensive seasons in team history last year, putting her close to several single-season records.
Allyson Frei: all-time strikeouts per seven innings
Frei has struck out 7.54 per seven innings, placing her third in BC history. The junior righty struck out a team-leading 186 batters last year for a 7.48 K/7 mark. Kim Ryan, class of 2003, holds the team record with 8.01. Tekae Malandris, class of 2004, places second with 7.66 K/7. Frei, a junior, has 408 career strikeouts, giving her a shot to also break that record in the next two years.
Lexi DiEmmanuele: single-season stolen bases
DiEmmanuele made the record books quickly, finishing with 24 stolen bases last year as a freshman. The sophomore places second in stolen bases in a season behind Cooley's 2013 mark.
Â
Bonus
Dreswick already holds a program record with 2.04 walks per seven innings, the lowest mark in program history. Dreswick, who tied for the team lead with a 2.47 ERA last year, looks to continue her dominance in the rotation.
