BOSTON COLLEGE vs. MASSACHUSETTS
Boston College looks to extend its unbeatan streak over Massachusetts to eight games on Friday as the Eagles stay at home to welcome the Minutemen to Kelley Rink for the first time since Nov. 3, 2015. Since Boston College joined the league and has been hosting UMass since 1995, BC is 33-6-3 against Massachusetts on The Heights and has not lost against UM at home since Jan. 18, 2013. The last denotes the last setback suffered against UMass in the last 12 encounters as the Eagles have gone 10-1-1 over the course of that stretch. In the last meetings earlier this season in Amherst, BC head coach Jerry York met up with first-year head coach Greg Carvel and dispatched UMass, 7-4, on Oct. 29, 2016. Boston College holds the overall series advantage, 61-13-3 and is 8-1-1 in its last 10 encounters with the Minutemen. Since Massachusetts has joined Hockey East, Boston College has mounted a 33-6-3 mark on home ice and a 28-5-1 win-loss total in Amherst.
MINUTE ON THE MINUTEMEN
Massachusetts skates into Friday's tilt on The Heights in the midst of a very long winless spell. The Minutemen are winless in their last 10 games, posting an 0-9-1 mark during that stretch. UMass's last victory came at home against Notre Dame in a 5-4 triumph on Dec. 3, 2016. In all, UMass is 5-16-2 and a 2-8-1 mark in Hockey East, tied for last place in the league with Maine and Northeastern. Sophomores forward Kurt Keats (5 - 8 - 13) and Austin Plevy (5 - 8 - 13) and senior Steven Iacobellis (5 - 8 - 13) are tied for the team lead in points with 13 while rookie Griff Jeszka has tallied the most goals with 6. The Massachusetts offense is scoring goals a rate of 2.04 goals per game, ranked 57th in the nation while the defense is holding at 50th, surrendering 3.35 goals per game. The defense is anchored by freshman goaltender Ryan Wischow, who has earned the brunt of the work. Wischow is 4-11-2 with a 2.81 goals against average and a .908 save percentage.
GLASS HALF FULL
Boston College was shutout at home against Boston University on Jan. 16, 2017. It marked the first time the Eagles had been blanked since losing to Vermont, 1-0, on March 15, 2015. It has been some time since BC has been swept in a weekend series by the same opponent. Last time that happened was at home against Maine on Jan. 25-26, 2013.
WHITE WASH
Colin White scored his team-leading 11th goal, including his sixth power play goal of the season. White is one of 21 players in college hockey to have scored six or more power play goals.
100 FOR CANGE
Senior centerman Austin Cangelosi snapped an 11-game goal-scoring drought an empty-netter on Sunday night at Fenway Park. The goal stood as the Estero, Fla. native's 100th-career point as Cangelosi added an assist on Michael Kim's equalizer midway through the second period. Cangelosi also remains college hockey's most lethal faceoff man, winning 64.55 percent of his draws (350-of-543). His 350 faceoff wins are the third most in college hockey but the most out of any centerman with that high of a volume.
POINTING THINGS OUT
Only four other teams in college hockey have scored as many points as BC has this season. The Eagles are fifth in the NCAA in total points (222), tied for fourth in assists (143) and tied for first with three (3) hat tricks. Boston College is also second in the nation in most road points scored with 136. Boston College is tied for ninth in goals scored with 79 and back up to third place in plus/minus differential (+27).Â
DEFENDING THE HEIGHTS
The combination of first-year goaltenders Joseph Woll and Ryan Edquist have filled in nicely for the departed Thatcher Demko. Woll has earned the brunt of the work, amassing an 11-8-1 (.585 - 29th in the NCAA) record, with a 2.39 goals against average (21st in the NCAA) and a .922 save percentage (17th overall). Edquist has been the primary back up with nice numbers, including a 3-1-1 record with a 1.89 goals against and a .930 save percentage. Edquist recently turned in a career-best 36 save effort against Ferris State in a 1-1 tie on Dec. 30.
