Softball players learn valuable lessons on Devlin SAF-E Trip
The Boston College softball team chronicled their experiences on the Devlin S-AFE Trip in New Orleans throughout the week. The trip focuses on community service in partnership with the St. Bernard Project, helping rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Senior catcher Tatiana Cortez discussed the fifth day:
Â
On the final day of the St. Bernard Project, Tulane allowed us to use their facilities and prepare for the season. Our workout consisted of benching and practicing our run test. After we worked out, we walked around the Superdome and the Smoothie King Center. We tried to sneak into the Superdome, but that ended in complete failure. After walking around and seeing all the history New Orleans had to offer, we returned to the Bunkhouse and had an awesome lunch with grilled cheese.
Â
On our final day at the worksite, one group went to a house that needed exterior painting. The other house needed some final touches of sanding as well as exterior painting. When we first got to the house, we had to wipe down the outside of it before we painted it so the paint could get on smoothly. Once that was all clean, we began to paint the house. While some of the group painted it, the other group sanded the walls.
Â
The St. Bernard Project was a great experience for all of us. It allowed us to work out of our comfort zones and do things we've never done before. It opened our eyes to think of what we take for granted. This trip put a lot of things into perspective and taught me how to be grateful for what I have, and to look more at the positive side of situations because things are never as bad as they seem.
