Softball players experience southern culture
The Boston College softball team will chronicle their experiences on the Devlin S-AFE Trip in New Orleans throughout the week. The trip focuses on community service in partnership with the St. Bernard Project, helping rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Junior infielder Chloe Sharabba discussed the fourth day:
Â
Day Four was another great day. We left the bunk house bright and early at 6:15 a.m. and went to Baton Rouge for the day to help a family whose home had over four feet of flooding back in August. It was crazy to drive through the neighborhood and see all of the vacated homes and remains from the flood.Â
Â
Our task for the day was to drywall, my first time ever doing so. Thanks to great ideas and encouragement from our chaperones – assistant baseball coach Greg Sullivan and assistant athletic director of student-athlete development Jen Kentera – we had a lot of fun and laughs. It was cool to finally be able to put a face to the house we were rebuilding. It was good to help out and put a smile on their faces.Â
Â
After we finished up at the house, we headed over to LSU and got a chance to check out their campus. Death Valley (Tiger Stadium) is not too shabby.
Â
We finished the day with a delicious dinner at a restaurant called Mike Anderson's where we tried some delicious southern food. I finally tasted some authentic jambalaya.
Â
We're looking forward to finishing this service trip on a high note and getting these houses ready so families can finally move in.
