Eagles In New Orleans: Day 3
January 12, 2017 | Softball
Softball athletes play, draw and read with kids at The Boys & Girls Club
The Boston College softball team will chronicle their experiences on the Devlin S-AFE Trip in New Orleans throughout the week. The trip focuses on community service in partnership with the St. Bernard Project, helping rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Sophomore outfielder Lexi DiEmmanuele discussed the third day:
Â
Today we finally finished sanding the walls and moved on to priming the inside walls of the first house we've worked on. After a long day of painting, we went to The Boys & Girls Club to read and play with kids.
Â
Half of the student-athletes went to a room to help kids with homework, and half of us went into the reading room. I went to the reading room with all my teammates – Jessica Dreswick, Tatiana Cortez, Jordan Chimento and Chloe Sharabba. We were reading with them, and we played some board games. I drew with some of the girls, and I made friends with a little girl I drew with named Portland.
Â
Then we went outside. Some of the kids were playing Foursquare, and then we started playing a football game with each other. In one little area, the boys and girls had a dance-off with Tulane football, men's basketball and men's track athletes who were also part of the visit.
Â
We're excited for tomorrow because we're working on a house that belongs to a family. The house we've sanded and painted the last few days is an opportunity house, which is where they buy the land and then build the house to sell.
Â
However, tomorrow's house belongs to someone affected by flooding. We're actually going to meet the family and talk to them about what happened. At our first house, we didn't have a face to put to it yet, but we're going to think about this family as we work on their house tomorrow.
