Late Comeback By Virginia Proves Too Much in Overtime Loss

With a late goal in the second half, Virginia's momentum pushes them to victory against BC in overtimes
NEWTON, Mass. – In another tough ACC matchup between the No. 9 Boston College field hockey team and No. 16 Virginia, the Cavaliers scored a late game-tying goal to send the game into overtime where Lucy Hyams tallied the game-winning goal on a fast break less than two minutes in.Â
In the first half, junior Chelcie Mendonca connected with sophomore Lucy Lytle for her third goal of the season on a tip-in out in front of the net. While allowing the only goal in the first half, Virginia was strong on offense out-shooting the Eagles, 7-4. However, BC's junior goalkeeper Audra Hampsch stood strong in the net making four saves to maintain the team's advantage.
Coming out in the second half, the Eagles' offense quickly tried to add to their lead recording the first six shots of the half and earning three penalty corners. As both teams continued to push on the attack, the Cavaliers leveled the game on a goal by junior Caleigh Foust with only six minutes left of regulation.
The goal gave Virginia a second wind as they continued their attack, but the Eagles' defense kept the Cavaliers away from the cage, sending the game to overtime.
BC (4-4, 1-2 ACC) returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 25, when the team hosts Massachusetts at the Newton Field Hockey Complex at 2 p.m.
