KEY MOMENT
After Virginia Tech scored its first touchdown, the Eagles responded with a kickoff runback for a touchdown, but senior running back Myles Willis' effort was negated by a holding penalty in the back, pulling the play back to the Eagles' half of the field. The Hokies went on to score 42 straight points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Virginia Tech scored first when Jerod Evans connected with Trevon McMillian for a 15-yard touchdown pass with 9:17 left in the first quarter. The Hokies capitalized on a fumble recovery at their own 42-yard line and used eight plays to find the end zone.
- Senior running back Myles Willis returned a kickoff for a touchdown immediately after the Hokies' first touchdown, but it was called back after an illegal block in the back.
- The Hokies took a 21-0 lead into the half after Evans connected with Isaiah Ford for touchdown plays of 8 and 30 yards.
- Evans added two more passing touchdowns in the third quarter, pushing the Hokie lead to 35 points. Evans targeted Chris Cunningham for a 7-yard TD with 11:42 left and Sam Rogers for a 4-yard score with 7:15 left in the frame.
- Senior defensive back John Johnson intercepted Evans late in the third quarter and ran the ball back deep into Hokie territory - to the 27-yard line, BC's best field position of the day - but graduate quarterback Patrick Towles' potential 27-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Tommy Sweeney was dropped and the Eagles were forced to punt on the drive after two false-start penalties.
- Virginia Tech scored its first rushing touchdown with 2:25 left in the third quarter when McMillian took the handoff and charged seven yards into the end zone. On the Hokies' next drive, Brendan Motley ran in from the 26-yard line on the QB keeper for the final score of the day.
