VIRGINIA TECH POSTGAME QUOTES
Virginia Tech vs. Boston College
Sept. 17, 2016
Â
Head Coach Justin Fuente
Â
Opening Statement …
"I want to thank everyone that came out tonight. They were very enthusiastic and involved in the game. They helped us win today and our team and staff are very appreciative of that. We played well today against a big, physical team. We did a better job taking care of the football. We didn't eliminate all mistakes but for one week we were a more disciplined football team. We need to continue to improve in that manner to give ourselves a chance in the future. I am happy and grateful to get the win."
Â
On how pleased he was with the defense …
"I am pretty pleased. We were getting the ball back quickly. We played good, smart football. We thought they would get big on us and run the ball so we needed to handle that and not give up big plays."
Â
On Jerod Evan's development in his offense …
"I don't know. I don't pay too much attention to the numbers. I pay more attention to the grade sheet in terms of our decisions on a play-by-play basis. Every week, he seems to approach the game with a great mindset. He is a great listener and he tries to do what we tell him."
Â
On this week of practice compared to last week's …
"I liked this week much better. We are still figuring those things out. Just because we won this football game does not mean we can rest on our laurels. We will continue to work at it."
Â
On his expectations that if the team eliminated the mistakes that they could execute like this …
"I think that if we eliminate mistakes and stay healthy that we will have a chance every Saturday no matter what team we play. My caution to our kids is that we need to prepare and be ready every day. It does not mean we will win every game but it is up to us to allow ourselves to have that opportunity. We gave ourselves that opportunity this week and we were able to do some good things."
Â
On what made the running game so effective …
"I think part of it was that Boston College got tired. I felt like that it was very difficult to run the ball early in the game. It felt like as the game went on their defensive was on the field more and it just wore them down."
Â
On the impact of familiarity with Scot Loeffler's offense …
"That was a two-way street. Scot and Bud went against each other in practice every day that he was here. That knowledge goes both ways. I don't think there was an advantage either way with familiarity. Ultimately, we did a good job on defense.
Â
On Marshawn Williams …
"I liked him out there today. I like his demeanor in the game. He is serious but relaxed. I have enjoyed him in practice and was excited about him. He is a big, physical and intelligent kid."
Â
On Jack Click …
"He is a great kid. He is great with kids in town and specifically my kids. He is a lot of fun to be around. He is a great worker. It shows how much he cares about this program and this team every day."
Â
On what he saw on the targeting call …
"That is the rule. It is one of those calls that every now and again you get one of those plays that you can't really tell anything to your player. He isn't allowed to block low. I thought it was obvious that he was not trying to hit the kid in the head. It is one of those plays. There is not a lot you can be upset about. It seemed like the initial contact was with the shoulder but that is the rule. We are legislating safety out there and I understand that."
Senior DB Chuck Clarke
On the shutout ...
"It's very exciting you know to get a shutout period. During my time here…it's very exciting. Anything can happen … they can get a field goal or anything. They go out there and hold them and it's very exciting."
Â
On fumble ...
"Everybody has a job to do. The ball bounced outside to me and Andrew somehow he's always in the right spot…he's always there. He picked it up and it sparked a big momentum for the whole team."
Â
On following up last week...
"We just have to get up, dust off our shoulders and you can't dwell in the past. You just have to learn from it and get better."
Â
Redshirt junior CB Brandon Facyson
On the shutout...
"Oh yeah its very exciting like Chuck said we haven't had a goose egg since we've been here. It's something we've been talking about to get that. The backups went in and did a fantastic job and they made a lot of plays on the ball."
Â
On the man coverage
"I think it went well, we always have a plan going in and we like to switch things up a little bit and just do what we know how to do and when we execute no one can really stop us."
Â
Surprised to win 49-0 ...
"No I'm not surprised. We go in every week and we go in and set goals for ourselves….It's not surprising we look to do this every week, take the mistakes and be better."
Â
Postgame speech ...
"For one, just don't do anything that can hurt the team tonight, but as soon as the clock hits double zeros it on to the next game and that's ECU next week so we have to be prepared."
Â
Celebration ...
"It was a great feeling just knowing we came together as a family…We still have things we can get better on. We're a family and we came together and got this one."
Â
Junior WR Isaiah Ford
On TD catch ...
"Seeing the look earlier in the game and we missed it….I knew he was going to come back to it and he did throw it up and I knew I had to come down with it."
Â
Practice week ...
"We had a sense of urgency. We were pretty lax and we didn't know the reason behind it…We made a conscious effort this week because we knew we had to clean it up."
Â
Junior QB Jerod Evans
On touchdown to Ford ...
"After I threw it I said no that ball should not have been thrown….Luckily I threw a great ball for Isaiah to do a great catch."
Â
On no fumbles ...
"I feel great about it. These guys, I can't say enough about the leadership on this team….They have been through hard times, it's nothing knew to them. We have a group on offense who was tired of fumbling. This is a glimpse of what we can do if we take care of the ball."
Â
On the offense ...
"This is the offense that the coaches envision. The guys are getting a taste of what we can do."
