CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After picking up a key overtime win over then-No. 14 Stanford last Saturday, the 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey team will play its first home game this Friday, Sept. 16, when the Eagles host third-ranked North Carolina at the Newton Field Hockey Complex.
Â
Friday's game is the first of two this weekend as BC (2-3, 0-1 ACC) will then head play a road game at Northeastern in Dedham on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m.
Â
North Carolina will be the Eagles' second ACC opponent in as many weekends. BC opened up the conference slate last Friday, taking an early 1-0 lead at No. 1 Syracuse before the Orange came back for a 3-1 win. The next day, BC claimed the 3-2 win overtime against Stanford. The Tar Heels will be the fifth straight ranked team that Boston College will face in the season's first six games.
Â
"It feels like we've been gone forever," Boston College head coach Kelly Doton said. "We've had two consecutive weekends where we've left on a Thursday. But they love playing on their home field.
Â
"We had Syracuse last weekend and now UNC, and those are really tough games, but they're excited to be playing (at home) and not traveling. UNC is great every single year and they just beat a really good Wake Forest team. I know the girls will be ready for it on Friday," she continued.
UNC (5-1, 1-0 ACC) has won its last five games by a combined score of 22-5. Last Saturday, the Tar Heels topped then-No. 9 Wake Forest at home 4-1, before taking a 6-0 win over VCU on Sunday.
BC is 1-14 all-time against North Carolina, with UNC winning the last eight meetings. The teams played twice in 2015. North Carolina won 5-0 in Chapel Hill during the regular season before taking a 3-2 win in the semifinals of the ACC Championship en route to the title and a national runner-up finish in the NCAA Tournament. This year, Carolina was chosen to win the ACC title by a preseason vote by the conference's coaches.
Â
Friday is also Youth Day, where kids who sign up at the marketing table will have the opportunity to run a halftime field-hockey obstacle course on the field. Then, after the game, the Eagles will hold an autograph session for all in attendance.
Â
Sunday, BC will face Northeastern on the road in a non-conference tilt in Dedham. Boston College has a 12-17 all-time mark against the Huskies and have won 10 of the last 12 meetings between the programs. Last year, BC claimed a 6-1 win at home over Northeastern. So far this season, BC is 1-3 in non-conference action.
Â
Brittany Sheenan has paced the Eagles offensively this season. The senior has scored all five of her goals in the last four games, and is ranked 15th nationally – and fourth in the ACC – in goals per game (1.00). Last weekend, she notched three goals, including a two-goal outing against Stanford. In goal, Audra Hampsch has averaged 7.20 saves per game to lead the conference and rank 16th nationally.
Â
Following this weekend's games, will host a pair of games next weekend. On Friday, Sept. 23, the Eagles will welcome No. 14 Virginia at 6 p.m., before welcoming Massachusetts to the Newton Field Hockey Complex on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available at bceagles.com.
