McKenzie Meehan scored her seventh goal of the season as Boston College escaped with a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Northeastern on Sunday afternoon. The win came in dramatic fashion as BC senior Andrea O'Brien scored with just three seconds to play in regulation to send the game into overtime. BC is now 7-0-1, while Northeastern is now 3-4-1.
TURNING POINT
Lauren Berman set up the game-tying goal with three seconds left in regulation. The Eagles midfielder from Canton sent the ball into the box in hopes of getting a deflection. Andrea O'Brien, a native of Acton, deflected a long ball into the box and by the Northeastern goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch, who finished with eight saves.
That set up Meehan's goal in double-overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles offensive pressure started from the whistle. BC had six corner kicks in the first 20 minutes of play. Lauren Berman had a great chance four minutes into the match which Northeastern goalkeeper Nathalie Nidetch came up with the save. BC's Samantha Hiatt one-timed the corner from Jenna Bike and Nidetch deflected the ball off the crossbar in the 15th minute of play.
- BC's offense continued to pressure Northeastern but the Huskies defense did not break as the half ended at, 0-0. BC had nine shots to just four for Northeastern.
- Boston College continued to pressure the Huskies in the second half. McKenzie Meehan had a great chance from 20 yards out and it just went wide of the goal.
- Boston College fouled a Northeastern player in the box and was awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute of the game. NU's Breanna Koemans calmly scored the penalty kick to take the 1-0 lead, which was eventually the game-winner.
- The Eagles offense went into overdrive.
- With under 14 minutes to play, Hayley Dowd had a set piece form 24 yards out. Her shot curled around the ball but NU's keeper Nidetch easily handled the shot.
- The Eagles earned a corner when Allyson Swaby sent Dowd into the box. After breaking from the defender, the Northeastern goalkeeper deflected Dowd's shot off the end line.
- BC's best chance in the final six minutes came off a set piece. Samantha Hiatt's ball went through the box and went right off the post.
- With 1:49 to play, BC's Hayley Dowd had a shot from 22 yards out which the Huskies keeper Nathalie Nidetch punched out of the box to secure the win.
- Lauren Berman had the ball to the right of the Northeastern goalkeeper. And with seconds left to play, she shot the ball at the goal, in hopes of getting a deflection. Andrea O'Brien was crashing from the weak side and she tipped the ball by Nidetch to tie the match at 1-1.
- In the first overtime, BC continued to pressure the Huskies. With 1:34 to play in the first overtime, Alexis Bryant saved the game with two saves on point blank in the box. It was the first threat from Northeastern since the goal was scored in the 62nd minute.
- Just 1:14 into the second overtime, Hayley Dowd was fouled just to the right of the keeper outside the box. Jenna Bike chipped the ball into the box and Meehan headed it into the far corner for the win. It was her seventh goal of the season and Bike's fifth assist.
NOTES
- McKenzie Meehan now has 18 career game-winning goals. It was also her seventh goal of the season and 53 career goals.
- Freshman Jenna Bike notched her fifth assist, while Berman was credited with the game-tying assists, which was her fourth of the season.
- Alexis Bryant had two outstanding saves at the end of the first overtime, which sent the game into the second stanza. Bryant made two kick saves in the box on Northeastern. She finished with four saves in the match. She is now 6-0-1 on the season.
- BC had 17 corner kicks and held Northeastern to just one in the match.
- The Eagles outshot the Huskies, 23-9, with 10 on goal. Northeastern had five shots on goal.
UP NEXT
- No. 13/RV BC will host LIU-Brooklyn on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Newton Soccer Field. The Eagles will start ACC action on Sunday, Sept. 18 at No. 6 Duke (1 p.m.).
