The junior’s ERA is currently first in BC record books
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College junior Justin Dunn was named to the Baseball America All-America Third Team on Tuesday, the outlet announced. It was the first All-America honor for the right-hander, who currently holds the BC record for single-season ERA.
Â
The Freeport, N.Y., native has helped the Eagles (34-20) to their NCAA Tournament bid in seven years and advance to the Super Regional round for the first time in program history. He leads the pitching staff with a 1.49 ERA, first in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and a .208 opponent batting average, good for fifth in BC record books.
Â
Dunn picked up his fourth win against 15th-ranked Tulane on June 3 in the opening round of the Oxford Regional, striking out a career-high 11. In his seven-inning start, he allowed just one walk, five hits and two runs, collecting All-Regional Team accolades for his work on the mound.
Â
The projected first-round draft pick is 4-1 with two saves and three combined shutouts on the year. He made seven starts this season and recorded a 1.43 ERA with 43 strikeouts and just 13 walks in those outings. Before transitioning to a starter, he had nine appearances out of the bullpen, racking up a win, two saves, 17 strikeouts and just three walks. He helped the Eagles to their first ACC Baseball Championship appearance in six years with his first career complete game at No. 22 Georgia Tech on May 21, allowing just six hits, three runs – two earned – without walking a batter. He recorded nine strikeouts and earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts.
Â
Dunn also earned All-ACC Third-Team and NEIBA All-New England Second-Team honors in 2016. He was named a semifinalist for the Greg Olson Award which honors college baseball's breakout player of the year.
Â
Dunn is the ninth Eagle to collect BC's 16th All-American honor and the third to do so from Baseball America.
Â
The Eagles return to action on Friday, June 10 when they take on No. 3 seed Miami in Coral Gables at 5 p.m. The game will be on ESPNU.
