Stevens Named Baseball America Freshman All-American

The right-hander is just the third Eagle to earn All-America freshman accolades
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College rising sophomore Jacob Stevens capped off the 2016 season by earning Baseball America All-America Second-Team honors, the outlet announced on Monday. The right-handed starter finished the year with a 2.54 ERA, 12th in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Darien, Conn., product went 4-4 in his first-year campaign for the Eagles (35-22), striking out 70 and allowing just 33 walks over 74.1 innings. Opponent hit just .227 against him and he only threw two wild pitches in 15 appearances with 14 starts.

Stevens also earned New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Rookie of the Year and ACC All-Freshman Team honors. His ERA ranked ninth on BC's single-season list.

He did not allow an earned run for the first 29 inning of his career before giving up a solo home run at then No. 19 Clemson on March 20. The righty struck out a career-high nine against North Dakota State on March 5 in just the third start of his career, going six innings without allowing a hit and walking just one. He threw a career-high seven innings in a victory over then fourth-ranked Louisville on April 22, allowing just one unearned run, seven hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. He picked up the win in the Oxford Regional Championship to send the Eagles to the program's first-ever Super Regional appearance. Stevens allowed two runs, four hits and one walk over five innings, while striking out two in the victory against No. 15 Tulane.

It is the first time since 2002 a BC freshman has collected All-America freshman honors. That year, Chris Lambert and Drew Locke earned Louisville Slugger All-America nods and Lambert was named to Baseball America's team.
