Dunn Named Greg Oslon Award Semifinalist
May 20, 2016 | Baseball
The right-hander holds a 0.96 ERA as a starter
ATLANTA Ga. – Boston College junior Justin Dunn was named a semifinalist for the Greg Olson Award, presented by Toolshed Sport, which honors college baseball's breakout player of the year. The annual award is given to a top amateur baseball player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season.
Â
The right-hander has made five starts this season and recorded a 0.96 ERA with 23 strikeouts and just 12 walks in those outings. While he had nine appearances out of the bullpen, mainly as the Eagles' closer - racking up a win, two saves, 17 strikeouts and just three walks - he has been stellar in a starting role. He threw a career-high seven innings against Wake Forest on May 7, allowing just one run on seven hits and three walks.
Â
Before heading into the April 9 contest against then-No. 16 Virginia, Dunn's last start came on March 15, 2015. The Freeport, N.Y., native has shown no rust in the role, allowing just three earned runs - four total - over 28 innings. He has tallied a career-high six Ks twice - in a 5.2-inning start against Virginia Tech on April 30, in which he did not give up a run on three hits and four walks, and in a three-inning scoreless relief appearance against Niagara on May 14, allowing just one hit.
Â
This season, he leads BC starters with a 1.22 ERA and opponents are batting just .209 against him, which is seventh on the Eagles' single-season record list. His 3.63 ERA is currently eighth all-time and his seven career saves is tied for sixth.
Â
The Olson Award was developed to honor college baseball's success stories and showcase players like Olson who have raised the level of their game through hard work, strength of mind and determination. Eligible players were those who were omitted from major publication's preseason All-American prognostications, but by the end of the season their on-field performance demonstrates that they are among the top amateur baseball players in the nation.
Â
Finalists will be announced during NCAA Super Regional action. The winner of the 2016 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Neb., during the College World Series.
