KEY PLAYS
The Eagles went up 3-1 in the second, but the Yellow Jackets fired back, scoring four in the third to take a 5-3 lead, which they did not relent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles capitalized on Georgia Tech errors in the first to score two for an early lead. Strem, who reached on a base hit, took off for second and the catcher's throw popped out of second baseman Wade Bailey's glove. Senior Joe Cronin grounded to third, but first baseman dropped the ball, putting runners on the corners with two down. Braren doubled off the wall in right center to drive in both BC runners before a strikeout ended the inning.
- The Yellow Jackets got one back in the bottom of the inning. Bailey reached on a bunt single and was off on the pitch to Matt Gonzalez, who chopped one to third. On Cronin's throw to first, Bailey headed for third and first baseman Mitch Bigras' throw bounced off his helmet, allowing him to score.
- BC earned back its two-run advantage in the second. Hoggarth led off with a high chopper to left for a base hit and moved to second on a wild pitch. Bigras plated him with a single past the diving first baseman.
- Tech took the lead in the third, scoring four runs on three hits, three walks and a BC error. The Jackets loaded the bases on a single, walk and throwing error on a sac bunt attempt. Matt Gonzalez singled through the left side to tie the game at three before junior starting right-hander Mike King got the first out with a strikeout looking. He then was able to get the runner coming home from third one hit back to the mound, but after reloading the bases with a walk, Brandt Stallings knocked a base hit to left center to plate two more. After another walk, King got a grounder to third to end the inning.
- The Jackets added a run in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Connor Justus led off with single to right center, moved to second on a sac bunt and to third on a chopper to first. Kel Johnson plated him with a scortcher down the first-base line. After a hit by pitch, freshman LHP Zach Stromberg relieved King and got a grounder, stranding two.
- The Eagles loaded the bases in the seventh, but could not push a run across. With one out, senior Gabriel Hernandez legged out an infield single, Palomaki was hit by a pitch and Strem grounded one to short and Justus' throw pulled the second baseman off the bag to allow all runners to be safe. GT starter Brandon Gold came back with back-to-back strikeouts to hold off BC.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- King tied season-highs, allowing 10 hits, six runs and three walks. He allowed three earned runs and struck out two on the night. All three walks came in the third inning.
- The Eagles go to 6-8 against top-25 teams.
- The loss halts a four-game win streak and a three-game win streak against Georgia Tech, dating back to last season.
