Colin White was tabbed the Geoge C. Carens New England Rookie of the Year while Thatcher Demko and Ryan Fitzgerald collected New England Division I All-Star recognition
BOSTON - Freshman forward Colin White was named the George C. Carens Rookie of the Year while juniors Thatcher Demko and Ryan Fitzgerald were honored as New England Division I All-Stars on Friday morning according to an announcement made by the New England Hockey Writers' Association on April 1.
White ranks as the fourth-highest scoring freshman in all of college hockey with 42 points and 1.17 points per game. Nationally, he ranks 22nd overall.
This mark's White's second big postseason award of the season as the Hanover, Mass. native was also named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, the seventh in school history. He is Boston College's first rookie to attain 40 points in his first season since Johnny Gaudreau did so in 2011-12.
Demko is one of three backstoppers named as an All-New England All-Star selection, joining Kevin Boyle (UMass Lowell) and Alex Lyon (Yale).
On March 31, Demko became the third Eagle in the last four seasons to be named as a Hobey Baker top three finalist.
Heading into the Frozen Four, Demko possesses the nation's second-best save percentage (.936) and seventh-best goals against average mark (1.85). He has accrued a .763 winning percentage, third best in college hockey, and his 27 overall wins are also third best.
Most notably, the San Diego native has turned in 10 shutouts this season, two short of matching the NCAA single-season record set by Niagara' Greg Gardner in 2000.
For a career, Demko is 62-25-10 (.691) with a 2.07 goals against average and a .928 save percentage (2,601 saves on 2,803 shots).
Fitzgerald is one of six forwards named to the New England All-Star Team, joining Sam Anas (Quinnipiac), Mark Jankowski (Providence), Danny O'Regan (Boston University), Andrew Poturalski (New Hampshire) and Jimmy Vesey (Harvard).
The North Reading, Mass. native improved his junior points total by 21 points from his sophomore to junior season, notching 23 goals and as many assists in 2015-16. Fitzgerald is currently tied for 18th in all of college hockey with 1.18 points per game.
Fitzgerald tallied his 100th-career point in grand fashion at the Northeast Regional against Minnesota-Duluth. He scored the game-winning power play goal for his 100th-career point. He also scored the overtime winner against Vermont to clinch a berth in the Hockey East semifinals. His 53 career goals have him outside of Boston College's top 50 by only a goal. Fitzgerald is also one of 15 skaters in college hockey with at least three short-handed goals this season.
With Demko and Fitzgerald earning all-New England distinction, Boston College has now had at least one delegate placed on the All-New England Team dating back to 1998.
This year's banquet will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass. The banquet will start at 6 p.m. All awards and All-Star teams will be presented at the gala. All coaches, student-athletes, family members and friends are encouraged to attend Wednesday's banquet.
