RALEIGH, N.C. – Boston College junior Nick Sciortino was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced on Tuesday. The catcher from Barrington, N.J., is one of 74 student-athletes nominated for the award by their coaches.
The award, presented by BaseballSavings.com, is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. The watch list will be narrowed down to the semifinalists, who will be announced on May 18. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 6 and a final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 19th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30.
Sciortino, one of the two team captains for the Eagles, has thrown out four base runners in seven attempts in the young 2016 season. With a career .986 fielding percentage, he has made just two errors in the last two years. He caught 17 runners stealing and picked off five more as a sophomore. While playing for the Chatham Anglers in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League, Sciortino led the league with 17 runners caught stealing and tallied a .990 fielding percentage. He shared the team's Ed Lyons Coaches Award, given annually to the players who have gone above and beyond the expectations of the coaching staff who have led by example and hard work.
