BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Jake Palomaki was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and two walks. He has tallied at least one hit in 16 of the Eagles' 23 games, including the last six, and reached base in 20 contests.
- Senior Joe Cronin went 2-for-2 with a team season-high four walks. He recorded his third triple of the season, which was the sixth of his career, good to tie for seventh in BC record books.
- Junior Michael Strem tallied a game-high three RBIs on a 3-for-5 day with his first home run of the season and fourth double.
- Senior Stephen Sauter launched his second home run of the season in the first inning.
- Freshman LHP Zach Stromberg recorded his first career win in a four-inning start, allowing five hits, three runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
KEY PLAYS
- UMass closed the gap to make it a two-run game at 6-4 in the fifth but the Eagles scored two in the sixth and pulled away with three more runs in the eighth.
- The final three BC pitchers – seniors RHP John Nicklas, sophomore RHP Donovan Casey and junior RHP Justin Dunn – did not allow a hit, run or walk to hold the Minutemen at bay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles scored three in their first at bat. Palomaki started the game with a double to right and scored on two wild pitches. Casey reached on a fielder's choice and Sauter launched one over the right-field fence to give BC a 3-0 lead.
- BC added two in the second to go up by five. Strem led off the inning with a home run to left. Junior Johnny Adams and Palomaki both notched base hits to put two on with one out and Cronin walked to load the bases. The Minutemen went to the pen for RHP Connor Donahue and Casey hit a sac fly to right to plate Adams. Donahue got a strikeout to get out of the inning.
- UMass scored one in the second and two in the third to make it a 5-3 game. In the second, Hunter Casey led off with a single through the left side and Cooper Mrowka plated him with a double to left center. In the third, Dylan Morris led off with a solo shot to right for the first run of the inning. With one down, John Jennings homered to left for another UMass run. Stromberg settled in and got back-to-back Ks to end the inning.
- BC added one in the fourth by being patient at the plate. Adams led off with a double to center and with one out, Palomaki, Cronin and Casey all followed with walks to plate Adams. The Minutemen brought in RHP Mike Geannelis, who got two Ks to get out of the inning.
- The Minutemen scored one in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game. New pitcher sophomore RHP Brian Rapp hit Mike Hart and he moved up to second on a wild pitch. Jennings drove him in with a single to left. Rapp settled in and got a strikeout looking and a grounder for the second and third outs.
- The Eagles added two more in the sixth to go up, 8-4. Palomaki drew a walk to lead off and Cronin plated him with a triple off the wall in right center. Cronin scored on a wild pitch.
- UMass got one in the seventh with freshman LHP Dan Metzdorf on the hill. Morris led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on another base hit. Nicklas entered and got a fly ball for the first out. Hunter Carey grounded one to second for the second out, plating a run. Nicklas ended the inning with another grounder.
- BC added three in the eighth to take a commanding, 11-5 lead. RHP Ben Panunzio walked Cronin to start the inning but got the next two swinging. Cronin stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Gian Martellini singled to center to plate Cronin and senior Gabriel Hernandez followed with a bunt single. Strem cleared the bases with a double to center.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- For the fourth time this season, the Eagles recorded two home runs in a game. They are 3-1 in those contests.
- Strem's lead-off home run was the third of the season for the Eagles.
- The Eagles tied a season high with 16 hits on the day. They are 8-2 when recording at least 10 hits.
- BC's 27 total bases, 15 assists, four stolen bases on the day were season highs.
