- Clemson starter LHP Charlie Barnes allowed just the one run over 7.1 innings, struck out four and gave up just four hits in his start to hold off the Eagles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles struck first, scoring a run in the second. Casey doubled to left and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by junior Nick Sciortino. Sauter plated Casey with a chopper to short after battling for a nine-pitch at bat.
- The Tigers scored four in the bottom of the inning with two outs to take a 4-1 lead. Seth Beer led off with a double off the wall in left and senior Jesse Adams walked two to load the bases. The left-handed starter forced two infield flies for two quick outs, but Adams walked Adam Renwick to bring in a run. Chase Pinder chopped one to short, which took a bad hop on junior shortstop Johnny Adams, scoring two runs in. Reed Rohlman hit a fly ball to right, which Casey dropped, allowing Renwick to score. Adams got out of the inning with a fly out to right.
- Clemson added a run in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Adams started the inning by walking Renwick and Skogsbergh came on in relief. He got a grounder to third, which senior Gabriel Hernandez mishandled, putting Tigers on the corners. The Eagles turned a 463 double play to record the first two outs, but Renwick was able to cross the plate. Skogsbergh ended the inning with a fly to right.
- The Eagles loaded the bases in the eighth but could not capitalize. Sauter led off the inning with a base hit up the middle and with one down, Adams singled through the left side. Hernandez moved them into scoring position with a sac bunt but sophomore Jake Palomaki drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Joe Cronin popped one up in the infield for the third out.
- Clemson scored its final run in the eighth off freshman RHP Sean Hughes, who entered in the seventh and tallied the final out with a K. He hit Andrew Cox to start the inning. Cox moved to second on a wild pitch and pinch runner Maleeke Gibson advanced to third on a passed ball. Robert Jolly plated him with a double to left. Hughes got the first out swinging and the next on a grounder. Sophomore Kevin Connor entered the game and after hitting a batter, he ended the inning with a fly ball.
