March 14, 2016 | Baseball
The senior went 5-for-11 at eighth-ranked NC State
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College senior Joe Cronin was named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday. The infielder led the Eagles (12-3, 2-1 ACC) with a .526 batting average, 10 hits, 11 RBIs, a 1.211 slugging percentage and a .609 on-base percentage in the five games last week.
Â
The captain from Scarborough, Maine, also went 5-for-11 with five RBIs and three extra-base hits, including a two-run home run, as the Eagles took two of three from eighth-ranked NC State in Raleigh, N.C., marking BC's first series win to open the conference schedule since 2009.
Â
Cronin, who leads BC with a .389 overall batting average, 21 hits, 19 RBIs, five doubles and 10 walks, also recorded the only home run in the Eagles' eight games at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., and drove in BC's only two runs with a two-run shot in the Eagles' lone loss (3-2) to the Wolfpack on Saturday. With his triple in Friday's 7-0 victory, he currently ranks fifth in BC record books with five in his career and his 89 career walks ranks eighth.
Â
This is the first conference award for Cronin. It is the ninth time a BC player has earned ACC Player of the Week honors. Duke's Brian McAfee was selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
Â
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 15 with a 3 p.m. matchup with in-state rival Holy Cross as they open Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field. The 12-3 start is the best in program history, dating back to 1973.Â
