Boston College has three of the 18 student athletes from ACC schools on the top-50 list
NEW YORK (Tewaaraton) – Three Eagles were among the 50 women named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, as announced by Tewaaraton Foundation on Tuesday evening. The list includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlights early contenders for the 2016 Tewaaraton Award, presented by Under Armour.
Senior midfielders Sarah Mannelly and Caroline Margolis join sophomore midfielder Kenzie Kent as the three representatives from the Boston College lacrosse program on this year's watch list. They are three of 18 athletes from the Atlantic Coast Conference to be recognized.
The Tewaaraton Award presented by Under Armour annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are made up of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed annually by The Tewaaraton Foundation.
Mannelly, of New Canaan, Conn., was the first Tewaaraton finalist in program history following her junior campaign, for which she put up 50 goals and added 17 assists for 67 points, the eighth most points in program history for a single season. She also led the team in caused turnovers (21) and set single game career highs in goals, ground balls and draw controls in 2015. Following the season, she was named an IWLCA first team All-American.
Fellow midfielder Caroline Margolis, named to the Tewaaraton Award watch list for the first time in her career, had a breakout season last year when she tallied 37 goals and a team-leading 28 assists. She was named to All-ACC Academic Team and the IWLCA All-Northeast Regional second team.
Kenzie Kent is one of seven sophomores to be named to the Tewaaraton Watch List. After helping the Boston College women's ice hockey team to the Frozen Four last season, she laced up her cleats and joined the lacrosse team for the remainder of their season. In only eight games, she notched 22 goals and added three assists to earn herself a spot on the IWLCA All-Rookie Team, the first Eagle in program history to earn that achievement.
While additional players are eligible to be added to the list as the season progresses, the field of athletes on the list will be cut down to 25 nominees on April 28. Based on the decisions made by the selection committee, the list will be cut down to five nominees on May 12, when those remaining will be invited to attend the 16th annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony held at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. on June 2. It is there that the 2016 Tewaaraton Award recipient will be announced.
