Junior becomes the 12th Eagle in school history to earn prestigious accolade
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced the 127th edition of the Walter Camp All-America team Thursday night and Boston College junior defensive end Harold Landry earned second-team honors.
Landry is the 12th Boston College player in school history to earn the prestigious honor. He is the first Walter Camp All-American since running back Andre Williams earned first-team honors in 2013. The last BC defensive Walter Camp All-America selection was linebacker Luke Kuechly in 2010 and 2011.
The Walter Camp All-America team is the nation's oldest All-America team. Players were selected by the 129 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors.
The significant accolade is the latest for Landry who is having one of the best seasons of any defensive player in the country. An AP All-ACC first-team selection, Landry has also been selected as the Division I Gold Helmet of the Year Award recipient, given annually to the top player in New England by the New England Football Writers' Association and the recipient of the 78th annual George "Bulger" Lowe Award, "New England's Heisman Trophy" and one of America's oldest college football accolades.
Landry, who collected All-ACC second-team honors by the media and coaches, was one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Award, given annually to the nation's top defensive end.
Boston College ranked as one of the nation's top defenses the entire season. Currently, the Eagles rank seventh in the nation and first in the ACC in total defense allowing just 310.6 yards per game. BC has allowed just 106.9 rushing yards per game, seventh-best nationally and second in the conference.
BC is also among the top-20 defenses nationally in third-down conversion percentage defense (12th, 31.9%), fourth-down conversion percentage defense (16th, 36.4%), first-down defense (Seventh, 184), fumbles recovered (11th, 12), sacks (Ninth, 3.25 per game) and tackles-for-loss (13th, 7.7 per game).
The North Carolina native is tied for the national lead with 15 sacks and leads the country with seven fumbles forced. Landry rewrote the Boston College single-season record for sacks in 2016, breaking the old mark of 13 held by Eric Storz (1997) and Mike Mamula (1994). Landry is tied for fourth in the country with 20.5 tackles-for-loss, the second-best total in Boston College single-season history behind only Mathias Kiwanuka's 25.5 TFLs in 2004.
Boston College concludes the season against Maryland in the 2016 Quick Lane Bowl. ESPN will televise the Quick Lane Bowl live from Ford Field in Detroit on Monday, Dec. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
The Quick Lane Bowl is the 25th bowl appearance in school history for Boston College and the 15th bowl in the last 18 years for the Eagles. Steve Addazio is the second coach in school history (Jack Bicknell) to lead the Eagles to three bowls in the first four seasons.
