Comeback Victory over Virginia Keeps Eagles' Win Streak Alive

Rally from 0-2 deficit on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville gives BC third straight win.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman Jill Strockis had another strong match for the Eagles, grabbing another double-double with 18 kills, and 16 digs. Strockis' kills tally tied her season and career-highs (18 against Fairleigh-Dickinson). Junior Sol Calvete was not far behind in the kill tally, tacking on 14 kills of her own.
- Sophomore McKenna Goss led the team in hitting percentage on the afternoon with .375, contributing 12 kills of her own to round out the top three. Freshman Sophia West had a strong day hitting as well, notching 9 kills in 14 attempts for a hitting percentage of .357.
- The Eagles' service game again proved its ability to propel BC to victory. Breaking the season-high tally of 10 aces that was set against Syracuse in the last match, the Maroon and Gold tallied 12 service aces against the Hoos, coming from five different players. Strockis led the way with 4, while Calvete had 3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
The teams opened the match exchanging points until Virginia used a 4-0 run to pull ahead, 11-6. The Eagles responded with a 3-0 run of their own to cut the lead down to 13-10, but another 3-0 run by the Cavaliers later on in the set to extend their lead to 23-17 was the deciding force that propelled them to a 25-19 victory.
Set 2
The Eagles started off the set winning the first three points. Virginia got within one point on three different occasions before BC blew the lead open to 12-6 after a 6-1 run. The Hoos clawed their way back again, going on a 9-1 run to grab a 19-16 lead. The Maroon and Gold evened the score at 20, but Virginia closed out the set by winning the final four points to win 25-22.
Set 3
BC started off with a 6-0 run, featuring three Calvete kills and a Strockis ace. The Hoos put a dent into the Eagles' lead after winning four straight to make the score 11-8, forcing BC to call timeout. The Maroon and Gold retook control to lead 22-15 after a 4-0 run of its own, and hung on to win 25-20.
Set 4
This time the Cavaliers started off with a 3-0 run to grab the early lead. The Eagles answered by winning five straight to regain the lead at 9-7, after Strockis registered back-to-back kills. After Virginia stormed back to lead 10-9, another Strockis kill evened the score at 10. From there, the Hoos embarked on a 6-1 run that gave them a 16-11 lead, but a 6-2 BC run brought the Maroon and Gold back within one at 18-17. After drawing even at 23 all, the teams kept exchanging points until BC won three straight to take the set, 28-26.
Set 5
Virginia won the first point, but BC grabbed four straight to lead 4-1, forcing a timeout to be called by the home team. After the Hoos equalized at four coming out of the timeout, both teams battled back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than two until after match point. After drawing level at 12 following a Julia Topor kill, the Maroon and Gold won the next three points, as a Calvete kill completed the comeback for the Eagles, who took the decider, 15-12.
UP NEXT
The Maroon and Gold will return home for its penultimate weekend of home matches, squaring off against Florida State on Friday (7:30 pm) and Miami on Sunday (noon).
