Haverhals' Pair Not Enough in ACC Quarterfinals
November 03, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles fall to No. 7 Virginia, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After the two teams combined for six goals in the first half and went into the break tied 3-3, seventh-ranked Virginia out-scored the No. 11 Boston College field hockey team by three goals in the second half to claim a 6-3 win in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship.
BC got on the board first through Brittany Sheenan's 11th goal of the season, and then claimed a 2-1 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. However, Virginia responded with a pair of goals to take a 3-2 lead at 32:50. BC didn't let up and with less than one minute left in the first, Frederique Haverhals scored her second of her two goals to send the teams into the intermission tied at 3-3.
After the teams remained scoreless 15 minutes into the second, Virginia netted a goal to take their last lead as Caleigh Foust tallied the first of her two goals. UVA tacked on a fifth goal at 58:05 before Foust scored on an open cage with less than a minute left to round out the final 6-3 score line.
Boston College (10-9) will now wait to see if the team earns an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Tournament. The selections show will air at 10 p.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 6, on ncaa.com. Virginia (13-7) advanced to the semifinals and will play No. 7 seed Wake Forest at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 11:08 – BC GOAL, 1-0: Brittany Sheenan got the Eagles on the board when she took Leah Frome's forward pass from the edge of the left circle and snuck it under Carrera Lucas for the 1-0 lead.
- 15:04 – REVERSED BC GOAL: Emily McCoy looked to have staked the Eagles to a 2-0 lead with her hit off the penalty corner, but Virginia appealed the decision and the goal was overturned.
- 20:42 – UVA GOAL, 1-1 (Penalty Stroke): ACC Offensive Player of the Year Tara Vittese converted a penalty stroke to knot up the score
- 23:44 – BC GOAL, 2-1: The Eagles converted off a penalty corner and re-took the lead at 2-1 when Sheenan's insertion was stick stopped by Chelcie Mendonça. Frederique Haverhals stepped up and ripped a hard shot through traffic, beating Lucas inside the near post.
- 24:31 – UVA GOAL, 2-2: The Cavaliers equalized less the one minute later when Lucy Hyams got the ball down along the end line to Hampsch's right, worked in and curled a hard-angled shot up and over a prone Hampsch.
- 32:50 – UVA GOAL, 2-3: Nikki Freeman played the ball into the circle for the right side to Hyams, who pushed it over to Colleen Norair. She got control of the bouncing ball and put a volley shot past Hampsch's right side
- 34:03 – BC GOAL, 3-3: Haverhals netted her second of the game to send the game into halftime tied up at 3-3. Off a penalty corner, Mendonça took the stop directly into the circle. Her shot was muffed, but Ymke Rose Gote got the ball, turned and sent a pass through to the other side of the circle where Haverhals collected the ball and got a shot past Lucas.
- 51:35 – UVA GOAL, 3-4: While down a player because of a yellow card, the Cavaliers scored the go-ahead goal. After the penalty corner broke down, Caleigh Foust got her stick on the ball in traffic and found space for the go-ahead strike.
- 58:05 – UVA GOAL, 3-5: After Virginia was awarded another corner, Anzel Viljoen poked in on the near side after a scramble in front and Riley Tata slid the ball over to her in traffic.
- 69:05 – UVA GOAL, 3-6: With Hampsch out of the goal and the Eagles adding an extra attacker, the Cavaliers go the ball deep and broke up the Eagles' clearance attempt. Hyams fed Foust just inside the circle, where she worked free for a backhanded shot into the empty goal to wrap up the scoring. Â
