Boston College suffered a tough home loss against St. Mary's, 62-54, at Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles are now 1-3 on the season, while St. Mary's improved to 2-2 on the season.
BC HIGHLIGHTS
- Mariella Fasoula fouled out with 16 points and six rebounds.
- Kelly Hughes pitched in with 11 points and two assists.
- Senior Emilee Daley, who just returned from an injury, played a season-high 13 minutes and scored nine points on three three-pointers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles fell behind 15-5 in the first quarter after shooting just 20 percent from the floor. The Eagles were hurt by six turnovers.
- BC cut into the St. Mary's lead behind a three-pointer from Emily Daley and the inside game of Mariella Fasoula. At the half, BC was down just, 21-19, after shooting 50 percent from the floor in the quarter.
- Boston College cut down on the turnovers but continued to struggle offensively as St. Mary's extended its lead to 10 points, 35-25, with 5:41 to play. The Eagles long range shooters got hot as Daley and Hughes made two consecutive three's and BC was down by just four points. A three by St. Mary's guard Devyn Galland halted the Eagles short run with 3:18 to play.
- A traditional three-point play by Katie Quandt put BC within two points with 1:31 to play. Martina Mosetti stole the ball and converted the layup and foul shot to give the Eagles their first lead, 39-38. A tough St. Mary's team did not panic and responded with five points, including a three-pointer from Galland at the end of the third quarter to push the lead to, 43-39.
- Boston College closed the gap to four points on an inside move by Fasoula, 49-45, with 7:19 to play. Fouls and rebounding hurt BC as Fasoula fouled out with 5:55 left to play. St. Mary's slowly pulled away, 54-45, with 3:32 left in the game. A three by Mosetti gave BC life as the Eagles were down just five with less than three minutes to play. The Eagles could not close the gap in the final two minutes of play.
