HOW IT HAPPENED
- SMU shot out to a 10 point lead behind a 6-2 early first quarter run.
- BC slowly chipped away at the lead. Hughes hit a jumper at 5:15 in the second quarter and the SMU lead was down to four points – 25-21. SMU extended the lead to nine points with under four minutes to play. BC made a run an 11-4 run which was capped off by a traditional three-point play by Mariella Fasoula to cut the lead to two points at the half, 34-32. Ella Awobajo had four points in the run.
- The Mustangs opened the third quarter with a 10-4 run to stretch their lead to 10 points behind the play of Alicia Froling. She scored 11 points in the quarter while BC shot just 30 percent from the field and was down 10 after three quarters, 53-43.
-SMU pushed the lead to 12 points on a layup by Froling with 6:14 to play. The two teams exchanged hoops but SMU's lead grew to 10 with 1:41 left. A steal and layup by Kailey Edwards (seven points, two steals) gave BC a boost as the SMU lead was six points. After three straight free throws from SMU, Hughes hit a three off a feed from Edwards on the break and it was a six point difference. Two more free throws from Morgan Bolton sealed the win for SMU as BC did not capitalize on key turnovers in the final minute of play.
