Adams and Skogsbergh Named 2016-17 Captains

The senior and junior were voted captains by their teammates
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College senior Johnny Adams and junior Bobby Skogsbergh were voted baseball team captains by their teammates, head coach Mike Gambino announced.
Â
"Leadership starts with character and integrity and those are off the charts with Johnny and Bobby," Gambino said. "The leadership of our club last year – starting with Joe (Cronin) and Scores (Nick Sciortino), along with the other juniors and seniors – would be really hard to follow up but having these two boys step into those roles, I believe, is going to allow us not to miss a beat as far as our leadership.
Â
"Just like last year, the captains have included the junior and senior class in a lot of the leadership of this ball club, which allowed the team to be successful, and this team will do the same thing. I love these two as leaders and I love the group of upperclassmen that we have."
Â
Adams was the first junior ever selected to wear No. 8 in honor of Peter "Sonny" Nictakis, which is given for battling adversity and representing the best qualities of BC Baseball. A career .254 hitter with a .960 fielding percentage, mostly playing shortstop at The Heights, the Walpole, Mass., native is currently tied for ninth on BC's all-time records list with 16 career sacrifice hits. He recorded a career-long, 14-game hit streak in 2016, which is tied for sixth in BC history, while his 168 assists in 2015 is third and his 163 is fourth on the single-season lists. He also turned 39 double plays in 2015, good for fourth all-time. Adams started all 57 games at shortstop for the Eagles in 2016. He was named to the 2016 Oxford All-Regional Team and earned Most Outstanding Player after going 7-for-12 with four doubles, three runs and three RBIs. He tied a career high with a 4-for-4 day in the regional championship against No. 15 Tulane, notched a team season-high three doubles, three RBIs and scored two runs as the Eagles swept the Regional. Adams led BC with 17 doubles and was second on the team with 60 hits and 80 total bases.
Â
Skogsbergh has a career 2.62 ERA over 65.1 innings and 46 relief appearances. He has a 5-2 record with four saves, all of which came in the 2016 season. Last year, the right-hander led the BC pitching staff with 24 appearances and four combined shutouts and led all relievers with a 2.61 ERA. Used as a set-up man and closer, the Hinsdale, Ill., native allowed just 11 walks with 28 strikeouts over 38.0 innings of work. He was second on the staff with 10 games finished and of the 32 hits allowed, just five were for extra bases. Skogsbergh registered a 2.86 ERA in ACC action, appearing in a team-high 12 games for the Eagles. He threw a scoreless inning of relief, allowing just one walk in the Super Regional finale at No. 3 seed Miami after picking up the save in the win over the Canes to force a third game, pitching the final inning and allowing just one hit with one strikeout. He also pitched one inning in the Oxford Regional championship game against No. 15 Tulane, allowing just one hit and one walk with a strikeout.
