Landry and BC special teams coordinator Al Washington to be honored
BOSTON – Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Awards Committee chairman Tim Whelan announced today that Boston College defensive end Harold Landry was the winner of the 78th annual George "Bulger" Lowe Award, "New England's Heisman Trophy" and one of America's oldest college football accolades.
Landry shared the award with UConn wide receiver Noel Thomas.
The Bulger Lowe Award recognizes New England's best offensive and defensive players in the NCAA Bowl and Championship Divisions, formerly known as Divisions IA and IAA. Landry and Thomas head an all-star slate of players, coaches and officials to be honored at the club's annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night on Thursday, Dec. 15, 2016 at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington, Mass.
Landry is having an All-America caliber season as one of the top defensive ends in the country. The Spring Lake, N.C., native is tied for third nationally with 11.0 sacks in 2016. In addition, Landry leads the country with six forced fumbles as one of the most disruptive players in the nation.
Landry's 15.0 tackles-for-loss rank tied for 11th nationally as he has been a key cog in the nation's 17th-best total defense. Boston College also ranks 13th nationally in sacks and 15th in tackles-for-loss per game as the Eagles look for two wins in their final two games to become bowl-eligible for the third time in four seasons under head coach Steve Addazio.
Boston College special teams coordinator Al Washington, who also works with the defensive line, was named the Assistant Coach of the Year in the Bowl/Championship Division by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.
Washington has played an integral role in helping create one of the top special teams units in the nation. Boston College ranks ninth nationally in punt returns, 26th in kickoff returns, 13th in kickoff returns defense and Tyler Rouse ranks 10th in the country in punt returns.
Boston College returns to action Saturday, Nov. 19 at Alumni Stadium vs. UConn. Kickoff on Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. as the Eagles retire the jersey of former standout quarterback Matt Ryan at halftime vs. the Huskies.
