McCoy Nets Two in Win at No. 16 Harvard
October 27, 2016 | Field Hockey
Eagles get goals from Emily McCoy, Sheenan and Lytle in the crosstown win
BOSTON – Emily McCoy scored two goals while Brittany Sheenan added one goal and one assist in Boston College field hockey's 4-1 road win over No. 16 Harvard on Thursday night. The twelfth-ranked Eagles were out-shot 17-7 in the game, but made theirs count while it rained increasingly harder and steadier throughout the 70 minutes at Berlyson Field.
Â
BC's win snapped Harvard's eight-game winning streak, and was the Eagles' fifth win over a ranked team this year. Boston College has now won its last three games and sits 10-7 on the season with Sunday's regular-season finale against No. 3 Connecticut on tap.
Â
Ymke Rose Gote collected a pair of assists in the victory.
Â
"I thought we played well defensively tonight and we stepped up well in our chances under pressure," head coach Kelly Doton said. "We had a handful of goal-scoring opportunities and were able to finish our chances tonight - and scored some pretty good goals. We didn't generate as many corners as we would've liked, but Emily put a pretty good in to make us one-for-one when we did have the opportunity. Overall, I liked our effort tonight and now we're looking ahead to a big, big game on Sunday against UConn."
Â
Sheenan got the Eagles on the board at 25:40 when her turn-around shot beat Crimson keeper Libby Manela and put BC up 1-0. Chelcie Mendonca got the play going, breaking into the circle on the left side, and sending a quick pass in to Gote just off the near post. Gote then pushed the ball over to Sheenan in front, setting the senior up for her ninth goal of the season.
Â
Just before the halftime horn, McCoy's turn-around shot pushed the Eagles' lead to 2-0, doubling BC's lead at the interval. Leah Frome's slide pass in front of the goal set up the play as McCoy scored at 34:33.
Â
The rain picked up in the second half and the teams traded possession for the first 17 minutes of the stanza while adjusting to the deteriorating conditions. With play locked in the Eagles' defensive half for a stretch, Sheenan generated an opportunity off a counter attack. She dribbled down the right side and into the circle, looking to shoot low on Manela's blocker side. However, Lucy Lytle cut in front as Manela went to make a play and tipped it in for the 3-0 lead at 51:56.
Â
As time wound down, BC further extended its lead when McCoy converted the team's only penalty corner opportunity of the night. Gote stopped Frederique Haverhals' insertion and passed it over wide to McCoy, who lifted a shot from just inside the circle high and in over Manela at 66:07.
Â
With under two minutes to play, Harvard broke Audra Hampsch's' shutout bid when Victoria Boylett deflected Ellie Cookson's pass in off a Crimson corner, pulling the score to its final 4-1 with 1:26 left in the game.
Â
"I was impressed with Harvard," Doton said. "They're having a pretty good year. They have energy and aggressiveness on the field, and that was one of the better Crimson teams I've seen in a few years."
Â
Hampsch made three saves in the win.
Boston College returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 30 when the team hosts No. 3 Connecticut at 1 p.m. at the Newton Field Hockey Campus. The team's six seniors – captain Alexa Brazauskas, Frome, Hampsch, McCoy, her twin sister Eryn and Sheenan – will all honored in a pregame ceremony.
