Dair upsets No. 8 player in the country in straight-set win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's tennis team, ranked No. 49 in the country, dropped a tight 4-3 contest to No. 7 Virginia Sunday afternoon as the Eagles opened both the spring duals season and ACC conference play.
BC (0-1, 0-1 ACC) claimed the doubles point as the teams of Asiya Dair/Jennifer Ren and Emily Safron/Katya Vasilyev both earned wins over the Cavaliers to start the match.
In singles, Dair upset Julie Elbaba-ranked No. 8 in the country -with a straight-set 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles spot. Ren also drew a singles win in the No. 6 spot as, after Ren claimed the first set in a tie-break, her opponent was forced to retire.
Lexi Borr, No. 47 in the country, fell in straight sets to fourth-ranked - and 2014 NCAA champion - Danielle Collins in the number one singles spot, while Vasilyev (third singles) and Safron (fourth singles) each suffered three-set losses. Freshman Jackie Urbinati won the first set in her match in the No. 5 singles spot, but dropped the second and third sets.
After a two-week break, the Eagles return to action when they face Harvard at the Crimson's Beren Tennis Center in Boston on Saturday, Jan. 30.
