HIGHLIGHTS:
For the second straight night, the Boston College Eagles battled into the decisive fifth set of the match, but were unable to pull away as they fell to Marshall University in the finale of the Fairfield Invitational held at Alumni Hall in Fairfield, Connecticut Saturday evening. Leading the Eagles was Brittany Pavich, who tallied 13 kills on 24 swings and had a hand in three of the team's 13 blocks in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
Boston College got out to a quick start in the first set as the Eagles Katty Workman combined two kills with a Marshall attack error as they took the first three points of the game. The Thundering Herd would come back to tie the game at 13 and take a two point lead, but two kills from Sol Calvete and additional ones from Kam McLain and Workman pushed BC out front and helped them win the first set, 25-21.
Set Two:
In the second set, Boston College trailed Marshall throughout the first half but was able to come back and tie the score at 16 apiece after Marshall committed a ball handling error and an attack error. The remainder of the second set was a back-and-forth battle which resulted in the opponents regaining the lead after tying the score at both 21-all and 24-all, respectively. With the score notched at 24, an Eagle service error and an attack error allowed Marshall to get on the board, taking the second set 26-24.
Set Three:
After Marshall and Boston College were tied at five, the Thundering Herd kept the lead the remainder of the set, while holding off a threatening effort from the Maroon and Gold, winning 25-20.
Set Four:
Boston College displayed valiant determination to force a decisive fifth set after taking the frame 25-23. With the score tied at 17, the Eagles recorded kills from Julia Topor and Brittany Pavich before Calvete finished the set off with one of her 15 kills on the evening.
Set Five:
In the best to 15 set, the Eagles led 7-4 early in the frame but a strong effort from Marshall's Ally Kiekover, who tallied two straight kills, allowed the Thundering Herd to begin their comeback. After a bad set cut the opponents lead to two, Marshall scored three of the next four points to win the set and the match, 15-11.
COACH QUOTES:
"We hit the ball better today, but our fundamentals failed us, [mainly in] serves and passes. Too many areas on that side of the game gave Marshall too many free points. We did some good things over the weekend, but made a few too many errors. It does, however, give us a pretty clear set of objectives for practice this week."
