HOW IT HAPPENED:
Boston College Volleyball opened up play at the Holly Young Invitational, hosted by the University of New Hampshire, with a 3-0 loss to Michigan State Friday afternoon. Showing a resilient effort for the Eagles were senior Katty Workman and junior Julia Topor, who combined for 17 kills in the loss.
Set One:
With BC leading 2-0 early in the frame, the Spartans took advantage of a Katty Workman attack error to get on the board. A pair of kills by Brooke Kranda, mixed with a Sol Calvete got MSU off to a start they didn't look back on in the first set. The Spartans were able to jump out to early leads of 6-3 and 15-10, but the Eagles continued to climb back into the set. Two kills from Workman combined with an attack error and a bad set on behalf of State brought Boston College back within two at 16-14. Later in the set, with the Eagles trailing by two, Boston College committed an attack error and Rachel Minarick finished the Eagles off in the first set with her first kill of the game on an assist from Sarah Washegeric.
Set Two:
MSU jumped out to early leads of 5-2, 10-7 and 14-8 in the second set behind a plethora of kills from Holly Toliver, Alyssa Garvelink and Brooke Kranda. Kills by Kam McLain, Workman and Julia Topor would bring the score back within three to 17-14 in favor of the Spartans, but the MSU offense posed too strong for the Eagles to defend against as they took the second set by a score of 25-18.
Set Three:
With the score tied at seven all in the third set, Workman followed one of her nine kills on the afternoon, with a service ace to give the Eagles their first lead of the frame. Back-to-back kills from Topor forced Michigan State to call timeout with the Maroon and Gold leading 10-8. Following a series of points from The Spartans wouldn't quit though as they fired off six straight points to retake the lead 16-13. MSU would finish the set on a 9-4 run as they closed out the Eagles in the first game of the Holly Young Invitational, 25-18.

"We lost today, but we competed hard in a very intense match with a Top 25 team. I was really proud of how our players fought through some line-up challenges we've had due to injuries. The level of play was very high and we'll use this as momentum for our two matches tomorrow."
