Game Notes
Team
- Boston College’s 76-0 victory over Howard was the team’s 24th consecutive victory over an Football Championship Subdivision opponent. The team is now 24-1 all-time against FCS foes.
- The Eagles have won their first two games of the season for the second time in three years.
- The 76 points Boston College scored today tied Boston College record for second most points scored in a game (76 vs. Holy Cross in 1949) and two shy of the school record of 78 set against St. Anselm in 1941. It’s also the most points since joining the ACC in 2005.
- The victory was the first shutout for the Eagles since a 54-0 win over Northwestern to open the season on Sept. 5, 2009.
- The 11 yards Boston College conceded was the fewest in school history.
- Boston College rushed for eight touchdowns. It was the first time the team ran for six or more since Sept. 25, 1993, against Temple when the Eagles rushed for seven.
- The 483 total yards of offense is the most since racking up 549 against Maine on Sept. 20, 2014.
- The Eagles have now scored a rushing touchdown in eight consecutive games.
- Boston College has now held four straight opponents under 10 points in the first half.
- The Eagles scored a touchdown on each of their first six drives of the game.
- The Eagles scored 41 points in the first quarter, which was just eight shy of the NCAA FBS record of 49 held by three teams. Boston College hadn’t scored 41 points in a game since a 48-34 victory on Nov. 9, 2013 at New Mexico State.
- The Eagles scored 62 points in the first half. The team hadn’t scored 60 points in a full game since a 66-14 victory against Temple on Sept. 26, 1993.
- The 62 points in a half is the most by any FBS team in the last 10 years.
- Boston College’s 344 yards in first half are its most in the half since racking up 318 against Georgia Tech on Sept. 15, 2007.
- The two first downs allowed by Boston College were the fewest allowed in a single game. The previous record for fewest first downs allowed was four against Villanova on Oct. 22, 1977
Offense
- Junior RB Tyler Rouse rushed for three touchdowns and has now recorded multiple scores for the second consecutive game. He now has a career-high five on the season and 10 in his career.
- Freshman QB Jeff Smith scored his first career touchdown with a nine-yard rush in the first quarter. He added two more rushing touchdowns in the second half - a one-yard score in the third and a 27-yard run in the fourth.
- Sophomore RB Jon Hilliman scored his first touchdown of the season on a five-yard run with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter. It was the 14th of his career.
- Redshirt freshman QB Troy Flutie threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to senior FB Sean Burke. It was the first career touchdown for both Flutie and Burke.
- Redshirt freshman FB Richard Wilson caught a seven-yard pass in the second half for his first career touchdown.
- Sophomore RB Marcus Outlow broke off a 35-yard touchdown run with 6:37 remaining in the second quarter. It was his first touchdown of the season and the first rushing touchdown of his career.
- The Eagles offense scored a touchdown on its opening drive for the first time since a nine-play, 95-yard drive at Virginia Tech on Nov. 1, 2014.
Defense
- The Eagles defense held Howard without a first down in the first half.
- The BC defense recorded four sacks to bring the season total to nine and 11 tackles for a loss of 47 yards. The last time the Eagles recorded double-digit TFLs was on Oct. 25, 2014 at Wake Forest with 13 for a loss of 44 yards.
- Sophomore LB Connor Strachan’s first quarter interception return for a touchdown was Boston College’s first interception for a TD since Kevin Pierre-Louis against Virginia Tech on Nov. 2, 2013.
- Junior DL Truman Gutapfel recorded a tackle for a loss of nine yards in the first quarter. It was his first of the season and the seventh of his career.
- Junior DL Kevin Kavalec recorded his first sack of the season and the 4.5 for his career.
- Sophomore DL Harold Landry recorded a sack in the first quarter to bring his season total to 1.5.
- Senior LB Steven Daniels recorded first sack of season, tallying 5.5 in his career.
- Freshman LB Colton Cardinal recorded two tackles for a loss of five yards in his first career game.
Special Teams
- Sophomore Sherman Alston’s punt return of 39 yards in the first quarter is a career best.
- Junior LB Matt Milano blocked a punt in the first quarter for the first time in his career. Manuel Asprilla is the last BC player to block a punt, doing so at Maryland on Nov. 23, 2013.
- Redshirt freshman LB Kevin Bletzer recorded his first career forced fumble in first quarter on a kickoff return. Junior LB Mike Strizak recovered the fumble on the nine-yard line, setting up a BC first-and-goal. They were career firsts for both.
- Boston College didn’t punt the ball away until 11:07 remaining in the second quarter.
- Senior K/P Alex Howell went 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts.
- Sophomore K/P Mike Knoll 4-for-4 on extra-point attempts.
- enior K Jake Wilhelm’s extra point following the team’s 11th TD was the first point of his career.
Other
- The third and fourth quarters were shortened to 10 minutes apiece, which is permissible when both institutions are in agreement.
- Former BC guard and Providence, R.I., native Louis Sammartino (1944-46) was honored on the field during the first quarter.
- Between the first and second quarters, former BC defensive back Jay McGillis’ father, John and brother, Paul, were honored on the field. Former teammates Steve Marciano ’94 and Mike Panos ’94 accepted the Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship on senior DB Justin Simmons’ behalf. Wes Davis ’11, the 2009 recipient, and Eric Shorter ’94, a two-time recipient, were on the field for the presentation.
