HOW IT HAPPENED
Providence College Game
Set One:
Boston College was defeated in the first set at the hands of the Providence Friars, losing 20-25. In the first set, Sol Calvete led the way with four kills but the Eagles couldn't find any answers for the Friars attack that notched 14 kills in the first set.
Set Two:
Boston College got its first win of the morning in the second set as they defeated the Friars 25-17. With the set tied at six points apiece, a Michelle Cruz service error gave the Eagles the lead. They never trailed again as Sol Calvete picked up eight of her 13 kills in the set while Julia Topor and Kam McLain each notched three kills to even the score at one after two sets.
Set Three:
In the third game, the Eagles were met with stiff competition again as Kayla Fitzgerald and Marina Rose tallied four kills each while Emily Horner had three kills on five swings. With the score knotted at 12 points each, the Friars didn't trail again, leading by as much as seven to close out the third set.
Set Four:
With their backs against the wall, Chris Campbell told his team to "wake up" and that they did with the help of Julia Topor. She recorded eight kills on 11 swings (.727) in the set and added eight digs to get back into the match, as the Eagles came back to even the match and head towards the decisive fifth set.
Set Five:
Brittany Pavich put her team on her back in the fifth set as she tallied six kills and a solo block as the Eagles took the fifth set 15-9. With the Friars within one point trailing 10-9,Boston College called timeout and came back firing, as they went on a 6-0 run and finished off the Friars.
Sacred Heart Game
Set One:
Boston College got out to an early lead against Sacred Heart and led by as many as eight points (20-12) at one point, and although Sacred Heart went on a 4-0 run to pull within four, the Eagles held off the Pioneers when Katty Workman killed the final play. BC took an early lead behind the efforts of Sol Calvete (4 kills on 8 swings) to win the set 25-20.
Set Two:
The Eagles found the momentum from the first set and after trailing early, were able to tie at 10. The lead changed several times but with the score even at 20, Anna Skold collected a kill and to go up 21-20. Back to back attack errors from Sacred Heart followed and a kill by Brittany Pavich ended the set 25-21 in favor of the Eagles.
Set Three:
After tying the set at 10, the Eagles trailed the rest of the way as Sacred Heart took the third set 25-22. Boston College tallied four team blocks in the set and Sol Calvete and Katty Workman collected 14 and 13 kills respectively, but the effort wasn't enough as the Pioneers saw their first victory of the match.
Set Four:
In the final set, the Eagles put together 15 kills and overcame an early deficit while holding off a late charge to walk away with the match victory Saturday night. With BC leading 23-22, Brittany Pavich notched one of her eight kills on the evening to regain the two point advantage. The set ended with an attack error courtesy of Sacred Heart.
COACH QUOTES
What coach said during his timeout in fourth set against Sacred Heart
"Today was a long day of volleyball. There was a two and a half hour match earlier this morning and this one was starting to stretch and you could see fatigue starting to set in. We were getting a step slow, not jumping quite as high, not moving quite as fast [but in the timeout], we just re-emphasized that this was something they needed to actively concentrate on."
On playing in front of a full crowd at Power Gym tonight:
"The crowd was wonderful. It was great to see them in the gym. I think we gave them an exciting match to watch and certainly our players like performing for them, playing in front of a crowd and I think both sides were a winner on that one tonight"
