HIGHLIGHTS
Katty Workman tallied 24 kills and a .372 attack percentage as the Boston College volleyball program defeated South Alabama (0-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) to pick up its first win of the season at the Boston College Invitational held in Power Gym Friday Night. They defeated the Jaguars three sets to one and put forth a complete team effort for Coach Chris Campbell, winning sets one, three, and four by scores of 25-23, 25-12 and 25-16 respectively. Also having big nights for the Eagles were Sol Calvete (12 kills), Mallori Moffat (17 assists) and freshman setter Camille Oemcke (27 assists).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
The Eagles took the first set 25-23 after going back-and-forth for much of the game. With the Eagles trailing 12-17, BC pulled off five straight points to tie it at 17. After the next two points were split between the squads, BC kept the lead for the remainder as Sol Calvete notched three kills in the last seven points of the set and BC, after trailing as much as 2-10, came from behind to take the first set.
Set Two:
Boston College found itself trailing early in the second set and was unable to rebound as South Alabama took set two, 23-25. With the Jaguars up 24-19, the Eagles fired off four straight points to bring the score within one, but a kill by Mechell Daniel closed the door on the Maroon and Gold in set two.
Set Three:
The Eagles were able to get off to a strong start and never looked back as they took set three 25-12. Leading 8-6, Campbell's squad went on a 8-0 run, highlighted by three Workman kills and an additional two from senior middle blocker Kam McLain. Another run of 3-0 later in the set was enough for Boston College to pull away.
Set Four:
Leading 5-4, the Eagles collected four straight points to go up 9-4. After the Jaguars brought it within five points at 15-10, BC pulled away with several small runs of their own and took the set 25-16, defeating South Alabama 3-1 in their opening round of the Boston College Invitational.
COACH QUOTES:
"I am really proud of the group tonight. We clearly had some first set jitters and we were pretty inconsistent with our ball control in the first two sets, and the girls showed the ability to get past it, settle down, and get into a rhythm and it reflected in the quality of play in the final two sets. Their ability to refocus like that was great and top-to-bottom, everybody contributed to this win."
