Post-Scrimmage Quotes: August 26, 2015
August 26, 2015 | Football
Head Coach Steve Addazio
On the overall look of the scrimmage…
“We came out of [scrimmage] relatively unscathed and I am really pleased. I thought we got a lot done today. Everything was better at ease today. The communication from the sideline was better today. The team operated better. Everything was smoother today. Without a doubt, today was the best thing we could have done. We definitely took another step and there was doubt about that. We win or lose everything here and clearly we won it and did a good job today.”
On the performance of the offense in scrimmage today…
“There was a lot of progression. We had a pretty good day out there today. Very good. There was more consistency and we made more plays up front. We still had a couple plays where we fell down and you get down and distance but there was a lot of improvement and I really liked it.”
On the three touchdown performance by running back Myles Willis…
“Myles is a hardworking and a really great guy. It was great to have him back out there today. Sometimes you take a step, the dust settles, you take another step. You just have to keep pounding away at the rock until that happens and then build on it. There is no formula, there is no ‘On the 12th day we rise.’ It is what it is. I thought today we took a step and came out of the murkiness. It didn’t look so murky or strained. Are we a find-tuned machine? No. But on the flip side of it, today on defense we got the ball run on us today which we can’t let happen to us.
On finding the second quarterback…
“I thought Troy [Flutie] made a few plays today. It was the first time that I saw him look like he made a few steps today. Jeff [Smith] made a few plays today. They both made some plays today, which is overall good. The young kid [John] Fadule made a couple plays at the end. There were plays to be made.”
On the play of freshman wide receiver Elijah Robinson…
“Elijah [Robinson] got on top of the defense a few times, which is nice to see. Elijah is a great athlete and we made the right decision [turning him to a wide receiver from a quarterback]. It looks like he is going to be a real X receiver. He’s long, 190-pound guy who can go up and get the ball. I think that was the right decision. He has huge hands, which is going to help us. Thadd [Smith] has had a great camp and Sherman [Alston] has had a great camp. Those are three guys who are going to be playmakers in there. David Dudek has been steady as usual.”
On the developing offensive line…
“Obviously there was more [cohesion] today between the offensive line, which is why they were more productive. You still don’t have Harris Williams in there, who is a starter, and we are still rotating Jon Baker and Frank Taylor at center and guard. We are also rotating [Jim] Cashman everywhere so there is still a lot [to be determined in regards to the O-Line]. It’s a bit of an illusion because Harris Williams has not been in one competitive rep this camo and he is your best offensive line.”
Freshman WR Elijah Robinson
On the decision to switch to wide receiver…
“It was something I was completely on board with. Throughout the spring and throughout the fall camp, I was contemplating where I could fit best in this offense and where I could help the team the most. Wide receiver was a position I was thinking about. I saw down with all the coaches, who were all on board with the decision with whatever I did. [As a result] I made the decision to switch. They said I could go back to quarterback if it didn’t work out, but I think it is.”
On getting help from the defense…
“The defensive backs do a great job working us all week. I kind of know their tendencies and the type of defense they like to play. Some like to trail, some like to bump and run, and I got a step on [Taj-Amir Torress] on that [touchdown] play and he had great coverage on it.”
On enrolling early at Boston College…
“Being here in the spring was definitely a great opportunity. I struggled a bit to learn the offense, but other than that, they welcomed me and I [learned] the offense pretty quickly. I was able to get a lot of reps at quarterback and could get a feel for the speed of the game. Coming out here at wide receiver, it’s more of an athletic game and I was [able to make the transition.]”
Sophomore WR Sherman Alston
On the offense’s performance…
“The offense was more in sync today. We came out working hard and were able to do what Coach Addazio said to do. We were more together as a team.”
On the performance of Elijah Robinson…
“Elijah was a big pickup for the wide receiver group and the team as a whole. He is a great athlete and it was good to see him out there making plays today.”
Junior RB Myles Willis
On recovering from mistakes…
“Naturally before a game, I am always nervous and I had two big mistakes. The nerves are gone but at that point, you are already low, and so the only way you can go is up. I just refocused and got better.”
On the offense’s production…
“Not much changed today. Camp is back and forth. That is what camp is. You see the same faces, the same schemes and going back and forth, you see stuff. Sometimes the defense will have a day and sometimes the offense has a day. I felt that today, we came out and were more relaxed and just had a better day than the last scrimmage.”
On his technique…
“I need to be disciplined with my technique. We have great coaches here who teach us exactly what we need to know. Once you get out of that technique, you are on your own. I need to stay in with the technique and arm myself with the technique and fundamentals that I have been taught.”
On taking on the bulk of the runs in the scrimmage…
“That is the beauty of having a big group of backs. There has been days when Jon [Hilliman], Marcus [Outlow] and Tyler [Rouse] taking the bulk of the work. You never know how the season is going to go so it’s good to get that preparation now. It is always good to be out here [in the scrimmage].”
Senior K/P Alex Howell
On special teams play…
“Special teams is a weapon that can be either used against you or for you. People think that is defense but it is also offense. I want to be the best I can be going forward. Last year? Who cares about last year. It is a new season.”
On his role…
“I am here to play football. I am not here to be a punter or a kicker. I’m here to do what coach asks me to do, so if he asks me to do all [field goals, punting, extra points], I will. I want to be the best at all three.”
Junior C Frank Taylor
On working with the first team and QB Darius Wade…
“The reps are great. We are all trying to get as many reps as we can under our belts and prepare for the first game.”
On learning from Andy Gallik last year
“Andy Gallik was a good person to base your game off of. He was a great role model. He is doing his thing now in the [NFL] so I am just trying work every day and get as best as I can for game one.”
