Players' Post-Scrimmage Quotes: August 22
August 22, 2015 | Football
Senior DL Connor Wujciak
On the defense’s performance…
“I thought we had a pretty good day today. Everyone was out here flying around and working hard. We’re just trying to get better.”
On the defense’s ability to settle down after a rough start…
“We take pride in that as a unit. As a defense, you’ve got to have a short-term memory. If something happens you’ve got to kind of forget about it and move forward.”
On the amount of takeaways…
“We pride ourselves in trying to turn the ball over. That’s one of our keys to victory: winning the turnover battle. We’re just trying to do that and create more opportunities for our offense to get the ball and get down the field and score.”
On how the Eagles look heading into the season…
“Everything looks good for now, but we’re not where we need to be. We need to keep working. The preseason is not over. We’ve got about two weeks until Maine and we have to keep on going.”
Sophomore WR Sherman Alston
On the scrimmage overall…
“I think we did a good job overall, both offensively and defensively. We’re going to focus on the mistakes we made as a team and work on being ready for Maine.”
On the execution of the jet play touchdown…
“I give all the credit to the blocking. It was great blocking downfield that allowed me to be able to score.”
On the transition to an every-day wideout…
“It’s been a grind, but the coaches have been great, teaching us little techniques we use to help out in our overall game.”
On if offense is behind the defense…
“I wouldn’t say we’re behind. I think it’s just because we have a lot of new guys and a lot of the guys on defense are back from last year. But we’ll get it together and be good by the season.”
Junior DB John Johnson
On his interception…
“On that play, they usually think I’m in coverage. I just come off the edge hot and they usually don’t even see me.”
On the defensive adjustments after Hilliman’s opening touchdown…
“It woke us up. We began reading our assignments, reading our keys and being able to see a lot more. We started making plays from there on out.”
Sophomore RB Jon Hilliman
On his 80-yard touchdown run on the first play…
“It was a great push up front. I just tried to read my keys, trust my eyes and trust my vision. I saw daylight, so I tried to take it. I knew if I broke that first tackle, I didn’t think I was going to get caught. I just saw the end zone. I didn’t think about backside pressure, just picked up my knees and tried to out run anybody who was chasing me.”
On his impression on defense right now…
“All I know is that they’re fast, physical and they’re playing very well. So that’s a great sign for our offense that we’ll be able to get on the field a lot this year.”
Freshman WR Elijah Robinson
On his transition from quarterback to wide receiver…
“It’s been going pretty well. Going from quarterback to receiver, I still know the offense and I kind of know a little bit of the tricks to the trades to what the quarterbacks want to see from their receivers.”
On whether quarterback experience gives him an edge…
“It does a little bit, but I’m not going to say I have an advantage. I still have to go out there and learn the routes and learn how to run them. I still have to work on technique and getting off the line of scrimmage in press.”
On how long until he’s fully acclimated to the position…
“It’s only been five days, so I’m not sure. I’m going to keep on working and going out here with the other receivers and learning new things on what I can bring out there on the field. It’s all about on how much work I put into it.”
