It is the first honor for the recent graduate
Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- Boston College graduate John Gorman was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Baseball Team, the league announced on Monday. The right-handed pitcher earned the honor of the first time in his career.
The Norwood, Mass., native was drafted in the 31st round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft by the Oakland Athletics earlier in June. In two appearances in the Arizona Rookie League, he has not allowed a hit, run or walk in two innings.
Gorman earned his marketing degree from the Carroll School of Management. He earned BC's Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement as a senior and was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll as a sophomore.
Before the start of the season, Gorman was voted a team captain. His 77 strikeouts on the year tied for 10th on BC's single-season list. He set a career mark in 2015 with 10 strikeouts against Florida State in the ACC opening series, allowing just two hits and two runs.
Gorman concluded his BC career with an 11-17 record, six saves and two combined shutouts. He registered a 4.59 ERA in his four years and ranked on seven of BC's all-time records, including tied for fifth with 207 strikeouts, eighth with 71 appearances and fifth with 237 innings pitched.
Gorman is the eighth Eagle to earn All-ACC Academic Team honors and the first since Hunter Gordon (2010-13) and Matt Pare; (2010-13) took home the accolades in 2013.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Miami's David Thompson was named ACC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. For the complete list of the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, click here.
