Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Former Boston College wide receiver Shakim Phillips signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He joins former BC quarterback Tyler Murphy, who also joined the Steelers as a free agent.
Phillips rejoined the Eagles after playing two years at the University of Connecticut. He started his career at The Heights as a freshman in 2011 before transferring to Storrs. The wide receiver racked up 805 yards on 60 receptions with the Huskies, recording a career day with 10 receptions for 178 yards and a 75-yard touchdown against Maryland in 2013.
As a graduate student on the Eagles, the Paterson, N.J., native played in 12 games, making four starts. He made 13 catches for 282 yards and led the Eagles with four touchdowns, including a 19-yard grab in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl. In the postseason game against Penn State, Phillips led the receiving corps with three catches for 40 yards. He caught a 48-yard TD reception against Pittsburgh for his first score of the season and nabbed a season-long 49-yard touchdown catch at No. 1 Florida State in the Eagles' three-point loss.
Phillips was one of five BC players from the 2014 team to sign free agent contract to play in the NFL. Three Eagles -- Andy Gallik, Brian Mihalik and Ian Silberman -- were drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft while Josh Bordner, Dominique Williams and 2014 graduate Chase Rettig were invited to participate in rookie minicamps.
