Scouting the Hokies
- Virginia Tech enters the weekend series coming off two midweek wins, defeating Appalachian State, 13-4, on Tuesday and North Carolina A&T, 3-0, on Wednesday.
- The Hokies have nine wins in conference play, most recently take one-of-three at Duke over the weekend. They split a rain-shortened two-game series against the Tar Heels in Blacksburg the week before.
- In other ACC action, VT lost all three in Miami, lost two-of-three against Georgia Tech and in Tallahassee and at Wake Forest. They swept the series against rival Virginia.
- The Hokies are led by Alex Perez, who is batting .343, good for 11th in the ACC. His 61 hits are tied for fifth in the league and he leads the ACC with 52 runs scored, seven triples and 27 stolen bases.
- The pitching staff's 5.33 team ERA is 13th in the nation.
- The Eagles travel to Blacksburg, Va., for their final ACC road series of the season. They enter having only one conference road win on the year, a 10-7 victory at Wake Forest.
- The Hokies lead the all-time series, 17-15, and have 11 of the 16 wins at England Field. Since BC joined the ACC in 2006, the Eagles are 9-10.
- Head coach Mike Gambino, who was an assistant at VT from 2007 to 2010, has three wins against his former squad.
- The Hokies have taken five of the last six games, sweeping the series in Blacksburg in 2012 and taking two-of-three in 2013 at The Heights. The two teams did not meet last year.
- In the 2013 series, all three games were determined by two runs or less as game one went 12 innings with VT winning, 1-0, and taking game two, 7-5. The Eagles rallied to win the third game, 5-3.
- BC has series sweeps in 2006 in Blacksburg and 2004 at home when both were members of the Big East.
- After dropping all three games of the series at No. 23 North Carolina, the Eagles rebounded with two midweeks wins, defeating Rhode Island, 8-4, and Bryant, 11-5. After mustering just one run and 10 hits at UNC, BC scored 19 runs and recorded 24 hits in the two games.
- The Eagles' 24 wins is the most under Gambino. The most conference wins under Gambino was 10 and came in 2012 and 2014.
- Freshman Jake Palomaki has reached base at least once in the last 28 games, which is the third-longest streak in the ACC. His 40 walks is a single-season record in BC recook books. He has drawn at least one walk in 13 on the last 18 games. As the mainstay at the lead-off position, he is batting .557 when up first.
- Sophomore Johnny Adams has tallied a hit in 11 of the last 13 games, including the last five to tie a season-long hit streak. He has reached base safely in the last 11 games.
- Sophomore RHP Mike King has thrown two complete games in the ACC and pitched a complete-game, one-hit shutout against No. 24 Georgia Tech in BC's 1-0 victory on April 17. He was the first BC pitcher to pitch a one-hitter since 2003. He is third in the ACC in ERA (1.88), one of six players to pitch a shutout and one of two to throw a complete game.
- Sophomore RHP Justin Dunn leads the Eagles with five saves, which is tied for seventh on BC's single-season list. He has not allowed a run in his last six appearances - 9.0 innings - giving up just two hits and one walk and striking out out 11. He has picked up two saves in that time.
- Senior RHP John Gorman as recorded 183 career strikeouts as a four-year Eagle, which ranks seventh in BC record books.
- Sophomore Nick Sciortino is tied for third in the league with 15 runners caught stealing. He is first in the league with 12 in ACC action. He has also picked off four runners, which is tied for fourth and has only made one error in 319 chances for a .997 fielding percentage.
